Tokyo Pride

私は大きなイベント会場では道に迷いがちで、実際、これまでの年も何度か迷ってしまったことがありました。けれども今年は、私たちの愛すべきマスコットが目印になってくれました。遠くからでも、オレンジ色のブースと、大小のえこぴょんが見えて、「あそこが私たちのブースだ」とすぐにわかったのです。

私たちは2024年にダイバーシティ・エクイティ＆インクルージョンセンター（DEIセンター）を設立し、今年、ついにTokyo Prideにブースを出すことができました。これは、日頃から力を尽くしてくださっている職員、コーディネーター、学生スタッフのみなさんの思いと努力が重なって実現した、まさに愛情のこもった取り組みでした。

来場された方々に、これまで感じてきた課題、うれしかったこと、そしてこれからさらに改善していける点を書いていただくというアイデアは、とても心に残るものでした。そこに寄せられた声は、今後の私たちの取り組みを導く大切な手がかりになるはずです。

卒業生もブースに立ち寄ってくれ、私たちが進んでいる方向は間違っていないのだと、あらためて感じさせてくれました。「母校がこういうことをしてくれていて、本当にうれしいです」「自分たちが学生だった頃にも、こういう場があったらよかった」「法政を誇りに思います」。そんな言葉の一つひとつが、私たちの大きな励みになりました。

さらにうれしかったのは、昨年3月に卒業したばかりの若い卒業生が訪ねてきてくれたことです。卒業式で私が送り出す言葉として伝えた「学び続けること」「挑戦し続けること」を、今も大切にしていると話してくれました。

今年のTokyo Prideのテーマは、「多様性と平等がひらく未来」でした。私たちがDEIの取り組みを続けていく理由は、学生と卒業生の存在そのものです。困難なときであっても、彼らが私たちを前へと進ませてくれます。

I tend to get lost in large event spaces, and I have in previous years. This year, however, our beloved mascot helped me find my way. From a distance, I could tell exactly where our booth was—the orange color, and the pair of big and small Hosei bunnies.

We established the Diversity Equity and Inclusion Center (DEI Center) in 2024, and finally, this year, we had a booth at Tokyo Pride. It was a cumulative work of love, made possible by our very dedicated staff, coordinators, and student staff. The idea of inviting people to write down the issues they have experienced, the things that made them happy, and areas where there is still room for improvement was simply brilliant. It will help guide us in our future endeavors.

Alumni came by, affirming that we are doing the right thing. “I am so happy that my alma mater is doing this.” “I wish we had had this when we were students.” “I’m so proud of our university.” To top it off, a young person who graduated last March came to tell me that she is “continuing to learn” and “taking on challenges,” as I had encouraged them to do in my send-off speech.

The theme of Tokyo Pride this year was: “Equal rights today. A freer, fairer tomorrow.” Our students and alumni are the reasons for our continued DEI efforts. They keep us going, even when the going gets tough.
