PR Office Staff

With more than 400 administrative staff members at Hosei University, I have the opportunity to work directly with only a small number of them. I consider each of these encounters a special connection, one that I am fortunate to have.

One such person works in our Public Relations Office. As she was preparing to move to another department, we had a chance to sit down and talk. Our conversation left quite an impression on me.

She had always struck me as someone who genuinely enjoyed her work. So I asked her what she found most rewarding about it. Her answer was simple: “Everything.”

There is the joy of witnessing those moments when our students and faculty members shine, and sharing in their excitement and achievements. Then comes the satisfaction of bringing these stories to a wider audience. And, in turn, the pleasure of receiving positive responses from those who read or hear about them. Those responses, in turn, become a form of recognition of her own work, amplifying the excitement and joy she felt when she first encountered the stories. Each part of this process is rewarding in its own way.

These experiences have also deepened her sense of belonging to Hosei University. And she believes that the same may be true for those who respond to the stories she shares. In this way, the connection to the university grows stronger, both for her and for the people she reaches. As I listened to her, what struck me most was how deeply she cared about her work and about Hosei University.

I have often heard that public relations work has two rather different sides. One is sharing good news about the university. The other is dealing with problems and difficult situations of all kinds. I asked her about the latter as well. Some of the calls the office receives are critical or negative, sometimes accompanied by harsh words. Yet there was no trace of resentment or defensiveness in the way she spoke about them. Instead, what came through was her respect for the people behind those calls and her determination to take each concern seriously. Following the department's established procedures, listening carefully, and responding thoughtfully to each situation—I was impressed by the thoughtfulness and sincerity with which she approached this part of her work. It is the passion and dedication that people like her bring to their work that make our Public Relations Office so effective.

She will soon be moving to another department. The work will be different, as will the people and the atmosphere around her. But I have little doubt that she will find new sources of satisfaction in her work and build good relationships with those around her.

We may have fewer opportunities to see each other from now on. Still, I will treasure the connection that has allowed us to meet, work together, and share this conversation.
