Hosei Track & Field Team

I never tire of watching that video clip—the moment it was announced that the Hosei team had finished in the top ten, securing a place in the Hakone Ekiden this coming New Year.

Work commitments had kept me from cheering them on in person at the qualifying race, so I was delighted to have the chance to meet them today.

They were much calmer and more understated than they had appeared in the video clip broadcast on national television. But beneath that calmness, there was a quiet determination. They spoke clearly and confidently about the goals they had set for themselves for the upcoming race.

I asked what turned out to be the “wrong” question: 「走るのは楽しい?」 (Do you enjoy running?)

No one quite answered. Instead, I was met with a range of expressions that seemed to say it all. The coach came to their rescue. Training is tough, he explained, and at this point, “enjoyable” isn't exactly the word that comes to mind. But underneath it all is a genuine love of running.

Of course. That love must have helped carry them this far.

Watching a race, it's easy to find ourselves wishing a runner would pick up the pace, close the gap, or push just a little harder. From the sidelines, it's easy to forget just how much effort, discipline, and perseverance it takes even to reach the starting line of a race like the Hakone Ekiden. Every runner competing at this level has already achieved something extraordinary.

I have faith in our team.

And just like our runners, my New Year won't really begin until after January 3.

Let’s cheer them on!
