法政大学憲章の精神を体現する卒業生

今年は、法政大学憲章の制定から10周年にあたります。そのような節目の年に、まさに憲章の精神を、その生き方とキャリアを通して体現している卒業生にお会いできたことを、たいへん意義深く感じました。

今から随分前、後藤俊哉さんを法政大学へと導いたのは、派遣留学制度でした。当時は募集枠が限られ、選考も非常に厳しい制度でした。お話を伺いながら、その留学経験は、それ自体が貴重なものであっただけでなく、その後のグローバルで輝かしいキャリアへの扉を開くものでもあったのだと感じました。もちろん、その歩みを支えたのは、後藤さん自身の揺るぎない意志、絶え間ない努力、そして明確な目的意識にほかなりません。一方で、野心をことさらに感じさせることはなく、落ち着きがあり、地に足のついた、親しみやすい方だという印象を受けました。

後藤さんは、会計の専門性と高い英語力を兼ね備えたスペシャリストになることを目指しました。そのために米国公認会計士の資格を取得し、アメリカの会計事務所に勤務しました。第二言語でこの資格を取得したこと自体、大変な快挙です。アメリカ自動車産業の中心地であるデトロイトから、文化も雰囲気も大きく異なるシカゴへと活躍の場を広げ、働きながら大学院にも通い、税務学修士号（MST）を取得しました。その後、同じ会計事務所の日本法人で勤務し、いくつかの転職を経て、現在はグローバル企業のCFO兼取締役を務めています。

印象的なのは、単にどのような役職を経験してきたかではありません。資格を取得すること、異なる国や文化の中で働くこと、学びを続けること、そして新たな責任を引き受けることを通して、後藤さんは自らのグローバルな志を、一つひとつ具体的な選択へと変えてきました。

後藤さんにぜひ尋ねてみたいと思ったのが、「グローバルな視点」とは何か、ということでした。私自身も、これまで何度となく尋ねられてきた問いです。後藤さんは少し考えた後、それは、異なる視点があることを意識し、物事をさまざまな角度から見ることができることだと答えました。

これは、私たちが大学の「グローバル化」を語るときに、まさに目指していることです。すなわち、グローバルマインドセットを育てることです。後藤さんは文字どおり世界を飛び回ってきた方ですが、国や地域を越えたつながりが深まる今日、物事をグローバルな文脈の中で捉え、異なる視点から向き合う力は、日本に暮らし、日本企業で働く人にとっても欠かせない資質です。

今の学生たちにどのようなメッセージを伝えたいかと尋ねると、後藤さんの答えは明快でした。自分が関心をもつことを追求し、目の前の状況によって自分の可能性を狭めないこと。経済的な事情、社会情勢、あるいは現在置かれている状況の制約によって、諦めたり、自分にとって大切なことを見失ったりしないことです。　法政大学では、学生一人ひとりが、自分の関心を広げ、興味を深め、やがて真剣に取り組みたいと思えるものを見つけられるよう、できる限り多くの機会を提供しています。

そして、学び続けること。

後藤さん自身のキャリアが、その大切さを物語っています。KPMGを退職後、日本でいくつかの転職を経験し、外資系企業の日本法人に取締役として迎えられました。その後、経営についてさらに深く学ぶ必要性を感じ、二つの専門資格を取得してから現在の会社へ転職しました。そこで身につけた知識は、今の仕事にも生かされています。私は、この言葉に深くうなずきました。後藤さんの言葉は、卒業式で私が卒業生に伝えた四つのメッセージのうちの一つとも重なっていました。

最後に、後藤さんから法政大学へのアドバイスを伺いました。
　
「社会で活躍する優秀な卒業生の姿を、もっと発信してはどうでしょうか」

このコラムが、そのためのささやかな一歩になればと思います。

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the establishment and adoption of the Hosei University Charter. In such a milestone year, I found it deeply meaningful to meet an alumnus who truly embodies the spirit of the Charter through his way of life and career.

It was the study-abroad program that brought Toshiya Goto into Hosei University quite some time ago. At that time, the program had limited openings and a rigorous selection process. Listening to his story, I felt that the experience was not only valuable in itself but also served as a gateway to his subsequent brilliant global career. Of course, the foundation of his journey was nothing other than Mr. Goto’s own unwavering determination, ceaseless effort, and clear sense of purpose. At the same time, he struck me as a composed, grounded, and approachable person who showed no signs of overt ambition.

Mr. Goto aspired to become a specialist combining accounting expertise with a high level of English proficiency. To this end, he obtained the U.S. Certified Public Accountant (CPA) qualification and worked at an accounting firm in the United States- a remarkable achievement in itself, given that he earned the certification in a second language. He expanded his career from Detroit, the heart of the U.S. automotive industry, to Chicago - a city with a vastly different culture and atmosphere. He also earned a Master of Science in Taxation (MST) while working and attending graduate school. Subsequently, he worked for the Japan office of the same accounting firm and, after some career moves, currently serves as a CFO and a board member of a global company.

What is impressive is not merely the positions he has held, but it is how he has translated his global aspirations into concrete choices one by one through obtaining qualifications, working across different countries and cultures, continuing to learn, and taking on new responsibilities.

One thing I really wanted to ask Mr. Goto was what a "global perspective" actually entails - a question I myself have been asked countless times. After pausing to think for a moment, he replied that it means being aware of the existence of different viewpoints and being able to look at things from various angles.

This is precisely what we aim to achieve when we speak of the "globalization" of the university: the cultivation of a global mindset. Mr. Goto has literally traveled the world, but in today’s increasingly interconnected world, where ties transcend national and regional boundaries, the ability to view matters within a global context and approach them from diverse perspectives is an essential quality, even for those living in Japan and working for Japanese companies.

When asked what message he would like to convey to current students, Mr. Goto’s answer was clear: pursue what interests you, and do not let immediate circumstances limit your potential. He urges students not to give up or lose sight of what truly matters to them due to constraints such as financial circumstances, social conditions, or their current situation. Hosei University provides as many opportunities as possible for each one of the students to broaden their interests, deepen their understanding, and eventually discover something they wish to pursue with genuine dedication.

And, to keep learning.

Mr. Goto’s own career path illustrates the importance of this. After leaving KPMG, he worked for some companies in Japan before taking a director position at the Japanese subsidiary of a foreign-owned company. Later, recognizing the need for deeper management expertise, he earned two professional certifications before moving to the current company. The knowledge he gained along the way is enhancing his work performance today. I found myself nodding in strong agreement with his words. His message resonated with one of the four messages I had shared with the graduating students at the commencement ceremony.

Finally, I asked Mr. Goto for his advice to Hosei University.

"How about more actively showcasing the outstanding alumni who are making their mark on society?"

I hope this column serves as a modest step toward that goal.
