留学から帰ってきた学生たち

インターネットを通じて世界と瞬時につながり、AIを使えば、自分が存在すら知らなかった言語でもコミュニケーションができる時代です。それでも、わざわざ海外へ留学する意味はあるのでしょうか。

それでも、留学には今なお多くの意義があります。新しい視点に出会い、自分のコンフォートゾーンを飛び出し、自分でも気づいていなかった可能性に目覚め、これからの人生を考えるきっかけとなる。そして、生涯にわたるかけがえのない友人との出会いもあります。先日、留学から戻った二人の学生と話をして、改めてそのことを実感しました。

二人は、授業での活発なディスカッションや友人との交流、さらにはマイクロアグレッションに直面した経験まで、さまざまな出来事を生き生きと語ってくれました。一つひとつの経験を通して学び、成長し、自分自身への理解を深めるとともに、それまでの人生で大切にしてきた価値観を改めて見つめ直したといいます。二人に共通していたのは、自分から一歩を踏み出し、周囲の人とのつながりを築くことの大切さを強く感じたということでした。

見知らぬ土地で一年間生活し、授業についていき、単位を取得し、地域社会の一員として日々を過ごす。その第一歩を踏み出すには、大きな勇気が必要です。二人が学んだ環境は対照的でした。一人は多様な人々が集まる大都市の大規模大学で学び、もう一人はアジア系学生がほとんどいない小さな町の小規模大学で学びました。それでも私が印象的だったのは、二人の経験には多くの共通点があったことです。二人とも、自分が本当に興味を持つことに全力で取り組み、困難な出来事さえも成長の機会へと変えていきました。そして留学を終える頃には、留学生活は二人にとって、人生の中でも特に充実した、自分を大きく成長させる経験となっていました。

また、帰国後には、それまで気づかなかった日本の良さにも目を向けるようになったそうです。二人とも、日本を拠点にしながら、留学で得た経験を生かし、それぞれの形で世界と関わるキャリアを歩んでいこうとしています。

これまで私は、多くの学生が留学し、卒業し、それぞれの人生を歩んでいく姿を見てきました。二十年ほど前に留学から戻った卒業生も、今まさに帰国した学生も、私に共通して教えてくれることがあります。それは、留学は若い人にとって、人生を大きく変える可能性を持つ経験の一つだということです。

これからも大学として、学生たちの挑戦を支えていきたいと思います。留学で得た学びや経験が、一人ひとりの人生を豊かにするだけではなく、やがて周囲の人や社会にもさまざまな形で生かされていくと信じています。

When the internet connects us instantly with the world, and AI allows us to communicate in languages we may not even have known existed, why go to the trouble of studying overseas?

There are still many reasons. Studying abroad opens us to new perspectives, takes us beyond our comfort zones, awakens abilities we did not know we possessed, helps us chart our future paths, and can bring us friendships that last a lifetime. This is what two students recently returned from studying abroad conveyed to me.

Both radiated positive energy as they spoke animatedly about their experiences—from lively classroom discussions and conversations with friends to encounters with microaggressions. Each experience became an opportunity to learn, grow, understand themselves more deeply, and rediscover the values that had sustained them throughout their lives. For both, one such anchor was the importance of taking the initiative to build connections with the people around them.

It takes courage to take that first step: to spend a year in an unfamiliar place, keep up with their study, earn credits, and navigate everyday life as part of the local community. The two students found themselves in very different settings. One studied at a large university in a major city with a diverse population. The other attended a small college in a small town where there were hardly any other Asian students. However, what struck me was how much their experiences had in common. Both threw themselves wholeheartedly into what interested them most and found ways to turn challenges into opportunities for growth. By the end of their time abroad, each felt that they had experienced one of the most fulfilling and formative periods of their life. After returning, they also began to see Japan in a slightly different light, noticing positive aspects they had previously overlooked. Both have chosen to make Japan their base while continuing to engage with the world in their own ways, drawing on what they gained from their time overseas.

Over the years, I have seen successive generations of students study abroad, graduate, and build lives of their own. From those who returned some twenty years ago to those returning today, they have consistently reminded me that studying abroad can be one of the most transformative experiences a young person can have.

We will continue to support students as they take this step—not only because of what the experience brings to their own lives, but also because of what they may bring back to the people and communities around them.
