オレンジ団キャリアセッションに参加した皆さん

会場に入った瞬間から、どこか気持ちのほぐれる、あたたかな雰囲気がありました。何人かの在学生が声をかけてくれ、ゼミで取り組んでいることについて話してくれました。続いて、休学して海外で学んだ経験について話してくれた学生が二人。そして今度は、何人かの卒業生が名刺交換に来てくれました。仕事について尋ねると、それぞれがとても生き生きと、自分の仕事について語ってくれました。

乾杯のあと、もう少し歓談が続き、やがてキャリアセッションが始まりました。

この日は、二人の卒業生がそれぞれのキャリアについて話すことになっていましたが、残念ながら、私は一人目のお話しか聞くことができませんでした。

それは、いわゆる一般的なキャリア講演とは少し違うものでした。これまでどのような仕事をしてきたかということ以上に、どのような姿勢で仕事やキャリアに向き合ってきたのか、どのような選択をし、何を大切にしてきたのか、そして、その根底にある情熱が伝わってくるお話でした。若い世代に向けたアドバイスもたくさんありましたが、決して上から教え諭すようなものではありません。ユーモアを交えながら語られ、聞き手がその言葉を自分なりに受け止め、考える余白も十分に残されていました。ただ、最後に伝えられたメッセージは明快でした。冒険心を持つことです。

シンプルな言葉ですが、その中には大切なことが詰まっているように思います。冒険心を持つということは、未知の可能性に心を開き、安全な場所から少し外へ踏み出し、思いがけない何かに出会う機会を自分に与えることでもあります。

総長として、私が日頃から大切だと考えていることの一つに、卒業生と在学生、卒業生同士、そして卒業生と大学とのつながりを、どのようにつくり、さらに深めていくかということがあります。本学には、大学と強いつながりを持つ正式な校友組織があります。しかし、約3万人の学生が学ぶ総合大学にとって、人と人とがつながる機会は、いくらあっても多すぎるということはありません。

若い卒業生や在学生のために、こうした交流の場を自発的につくってくださる卒業生の皆さんに、心から感銘を受けるとともに、深く感謝しています。皆さんの熱意と、若い世代を応援したいという思いが、新しい出会いの場を生み出しています。そうした出会いが、それぞれの新たな挑戦や次の一歩につながっていくことを願っています。

There was a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere from the moment I entered the venue. A few of our current students came up to tell me about what they were working on in their seminars. Two others spoke about taking a year’s leave to study overseas. Then several alumni came over to exchange business cards. I asked about their work, and they explained what they were doing with great enthusiasm.

After a toast and a little more conversation, the career session began.

Two alumni were scheduled to speak about their careers, although I was able to stay for only the first talk. It was not a conventional career talk. In fact, it was less about the speaker’s career path itself than about his approach to work, the choices he had made, and the passion that had guided him.

He had plenty of advice for the younger members of the audience, but it was never delivered in a high-handed way. He spoke with humor, leaving plenty of space for the students and younger alumni to take in his words and reflect on them for themselves.

His final message, however, was clear: be adventurous.

It sounds like simple advice, but perhaps the most important messages often do. To be adventurous is to remain open to unfamiliar possibilities, to step beyond what feels safe, and to give oneself the chance to discover something unexpected.

As president, one of the issues I pay close attention to is how we can create and strengthen connections between alumni and current students, among alumni themselves, and between alumni and the university. We have formal alumni organizations with strong ties to the university. Yet, as a comprehensive university with around 30,000 students, there can never be too many opportunities for people to connect.

I am deeply impressed by, and grateful to, the alumni who voluntarily organize events like this for younger alumni and current students. Their energy and generosity create encounters that might not otherwise happen—and from those encounters, new ideas, encouragement, and possibilities can emerge.
