卓球部の選手たち
このチームでは、自由と自主性が大切にされています。また、上級生と下級生のあいだにも、フラットな関係が築かれています。しかしその一方で、練習やトレーニング、さらには私生活においても、はっきりとした規律が貫かれていることが感じられました。一見すると相反するようにも見える自由と規律が、チームの中で自然に結びついているところに、競技での成果だけでなく、将来のキャリアにもつながる大切な要素があるのだと感じました。
選手たちは、大学生活を学業と卓球に捧げてきました。もちろん、1、2年生の頃にもう少し遊んでおけばよかった、というささやかな後悔もあるようです。しかし全体としては、卓球への深い思いに加えて、チームの中で育まれている規律や自主性の精神が、将来に向けた一つの「訓練」になっていることを、選手たち自身がよく自覚しているように感じました。それは、これからどのような人生を歩み、どのようなキャリアを築いていくにしても、必ず生きてくるものだと思います。
そのことを選手たちが特に強調していたわけではありませんが、自分より経験の浅い人や、立場としては下級生にあたる人からの助言にも耳を傾けるためには、ある種の謙虚さが必要です。そうした姿勢は、技術を高め、チームを強くし、競技そのもののレベルを上げていくための、ごく自然な一部なのだと思います。選手たちが「自由」を自覚的に、そして誠実に引き受けている姿に、私は「自由を生き抜く実践知」が体現されているように感じました。そして、そのような自由は、選手たちが自ら成長の道を探ることのできる場を整えているコーチの存在によって支えられています。そのコーチ自身も、本学の職員として、同じように規律をもって選手たちを支えているのです。
今回お会いした4年生の選手たちが将来について語る姿を聞き、大学から社会へと送り出すことを心強く感じました。どのような道に進んだとしても、周囲から信頼される存在になってくれると確信しています。
Table Tennis Team Members
The team’s emphasis on freedom and autonomy, together with the flat relationships it cultivates between juniors and seniors, belies the clear discipline that undergirds its practice, training, and even private life. I am convinced that within this organic amalgamation of apparently contradictory dispositions lies an essential ingredient for success—not only in their games, but also in their future careers.
The athletes have devoted their university years to their studies and to table tennis, with only a mild regret that they might have allowed themselves to enjoy their first and second years a little more. Overall, however, I sensed in them not only a deep commitment to table tennis, but also a clear awareness that the discipline and ethos of self-directedness cultivated within the team are a form of “training” for the future, regardless of how they choose to live their lives or what careers they go on to build.
Although they did not emphasize this themselves, I could see that a certain humility is also needed in order to remain open to feedback from someone less experienced, or more junior in position, than oneself. For them, that openness seems to be simply part of getting better—improving their skills, strengthening the team, and raising the level of the game. To me, they embody “practical wisdom for freedom” in the conscientious way they exercise their “freedom.” That freedom, in turn, is made possible by the coach—himself a member of the university’s administrative staff—who is equally disciplined in ensuring that the players have the space to explore their own paths of self-improvement.
Hearing these seniors speak about their future gave me confidence in sending them off from the university into society. Whatever paths they choose to pursue, I am certain they will prove deeply reliable.
