スノーボーダー・岩渕麗楽さん
昨年私が移った総長の執務室には、最初から一枚のサイン入り写真が飾られていました。そこには、ヘルメットとゴーグルに身を固めたスノーボーダーが、鮮やかなデザインのボードとともに写っており、その背後のスコアボードには、日本人の名前―岩渕麗楽―がトップに「金」として表示されています。ウィンターXゲームズで撮影されたその写真を一年間眺め続けた末、ついに本人にお会いする機会を得ました。
30分ほどの対話の中で、その写真の背景にあるもの―あのレベルで競うとはどういうことか―が見えてきました。求められる精神的な強さ、競技そのものの高揚感、そして純粋にそのスポーツを楽しむ喜び。そうしたすべてを、終始輝くような笑顔で語ってくれました。また、コーチからの信頼がいかに不安や恐れを乗り越える力になったか、観客の声援がいかにパフォーマンスを後押しするか、そして最終的に競技とは他者との比較ではなく、自らの限界に挑み続ける極めて個人的な営みであるということも印象に残りました。
岩渕麗楽さんは、言うまでもなくトップアスリートですが、同時に一人の学生でもあります。スポーツ健康学部で学びを始め、現在は経済学部通信教育課程の商業学分野で学びを続けています。競技に全力で取り組みながら将来のキャリアも見据え、トレーニング、試合、そして学業を見事に両立させています。通信教育という柔軟な学びの形を最大限に活かし、時間を極めて効率的に使いながら、「新しいことを学ぶ」ことそのものを楽しみ、好奇心を原動力に前に進んでいます。簿記もその一つです！

Snowboarder, Reira ‘Leila’ Iwabuchi
The President’s office I moved into last year comes adorned with an autographed picture of a snowboarder in full gear with her striking snowboard, and behind her, scores showing a Japanese name—Reira ‘Leila’ Iwabuchi—at the top, marked “gold.” After one year of staring at this picture taken at the Winter X Games, I finally got to meet her in person.
The half-hour discussion revealed the story behind the picture—what it means to compete at that level: the mental strength required, the excitement of competition, and the pure joy of playing the sport—all of which she conveyed with a brilliant smile on her face. I also learned how much a coach’s trust in her helped her conquer fear and anxiety, how spectators’ cheers could fuel performance, and how, in the end, competition is a deeply personal pursuit—measured not against others, but against the limits one dares to push within oneself.
Reira ‘Leila’ Iwabuchi is no doubt a top athlete, but she is also a student—starting at the Faculty of Sports and Health Studies and now continuing in the School of Correspondence Education in Commerce in the Faculty of Economics. Fully immersed in her current sporting career while looking toward a future one, she seamlessly manages training, competitions, and studies. Correspondence Education offers her the flexibility, which she maximizes through an exceptionally effective use of time, driven by a genuine enjoyment of and curiosity about learning “something new,” like bookkeeping!
