実践知を体現する卒業生

多くの人が、最初の仕事に就いて間もないうちから次の転職を考えるような時代において、同じ仕事を20年続けるとは、どのような感覚なのでしょうか。答えはシンプルです。同じ仕事であっても、決して同じではない、ということです。勤務地や業務内容の変化、新たな機会や挑戦、そしてそれらに向き合う中で得られる喜びや達成感が、一見同じに見える仕事を、実は常に変化し続けるものにしています。

瀧澤洋美さんは、在学中にUCデービスで英語を学ぶ機会を自らつかみ、卒業後もアメリカで学びを深められた、本学の卓越した卒業生です。その仕事への向き合い方からは、本学が学生に育んでほしいと考えている資質――新たな機会を積極的にとらえる姿勢、挑戦を恐れない心、そして自分自身だけでなく周囲の人々のためにも環境をより良くしていこうとする意識――が、いきいきと伝わってきます。

これまでのご経験と実績を踏まえると、日本国内で働きがいのある会社ナンバーワンを目指すという目標も、十分に現実的であり、同時に大きな意義を持つものだと感じます。それは単に人材を引き留めることではなく、適切な評価と処遇のもとで、一人ひとりがバランスの取れた持続可能な生活を築ける環境を整えることにほかなりません。ライフイベントへの対応にとどまらず、多様な文化的・物理的環境への適応を支える視点も求められます。個々人のニーズは一様ではなく、それを理解するためには、まず丁寧に話を聞くこと、すなわち「ヒアリング」から始めることが重要であると実感しました。

コミュニケーション力、相手の声に耳を傾ける姿勢、より良くしていこうとする意欲、そして困難や挑戦に向き合う勇気――これらは、成功するキャリアのためだけでなく、長く続けても飽きることのない、充実したキャリアを支える要素でもあります。

責任を意識しながら自由に考え、行動し、挑戦していく。その姿はまさに、本学が学生に育んでほしいと願う理念――「自由を生き抜く実践知」――を体現していると言えるでしょう。

In a time when many people begin thinking about their next move even before settling into their first job, what does it mean to remain in the same role for 20 years? The answer is simple: it is never quite the same job. Changes in location and responsibilities, new opportunities and challenges, and the sense of fulfillment that comes from meeting those challenges ensure that what may appear to be the same position is, in fact, constantly evolving.

Ms. Hiromi Takizawa, a distinguished alumna, took the initiative to study English at UC Davis during her time at Hosei and went on to further her studies in the United States after graduation. Through her approach to work, she exemplifies the very qualities we strive to cultivate in our students: a proactive spirit, a readiness to seize new opportunities, the courage to take on challenges, and a commitment to improving not only her own environment but also that of those around her.

In light of her experience and achievements, I am convinced that her goal of creating a Best Workplace in Japan is both meaningful and attainable. This is not simply about retaining employees, but about creating an environment in which individuals are fairly recognized and supported in building balanced, sustainable lives. It requires not only accommodating major life events, but also supporting adaptation to diverse cultural and physical environments. Because individual needs vary, true understanding begins with careful listening. I have come to appreciate that thoughtful dialogue—what might be called attentive listening—is the essential starting point.

Communication skills, the ability to listen attentively, a drive for continuous improvement, and the courage to face challenges—these are not only the foundations of a successful career, but also of one that remains engaging and fulfilling over time.

To think freely, act with responsibility, and embrace challenges—she truly embodies the ethos we seek to instill in our students: “Practical Wisdom for Freedom.”
