フィギュアスケート選手 渡辺倫果さん
3歳の女の子が、テレビでオリンピック金メダリストの演技を見て、「私もあれをやりたい」と言った。そこから20年後、彼女はまさにその舞台で競技に臨むフィギュアスケーターとなり、女子選手として唯一、試合プログラムにトリプルアクセルを3本組み込んでいる。しかも大学での勉強も両立し、楽しみながら取り組んでいるという。
そんな渡辺倫果選手にお会いできたのは大きな喜びだった。すでに輝かしい実績を持つ彼女との会話で、いくつか印象に残ったことがある。
初めてリンクに立ったとき、楽しいと感じましたか？
「“自然”って感じでした。」
なぜトリプルアクセルを？
「誰もやったことのないことをやりたいんです。それが自分のこだわりです。」
試合に入るとき、緊張はしますか？
「何千人もの人が自分の演技を見ている中で、注目が全部自分に集まる。それってすごいことじゃないですか？」
演技後、点数が出るまでの時間は長く感じませんか？
「その後の流れが決まっているので、だいたい点数が出るタイミングはわかります。」
思うような演技ができなかったとき、すぐに取材に応じるのは大変では？
「そういうところも鍛えられています。」コーチによると、選手は演技直後にまず振り返りをするそうだ。なるほど、そうやって身についていくのだと感じた。
衣装や振付、音楽、トレーニング、練習、栄養管理など、さまざまな話を伺った。いわば“舞台裏の話”はとても興味深かったが、何より印象に残ったのは、彼女の落ち着き、プロ意識、向上心、そして規律の強さだった。このレベルで競技するためには、そのすべてが求められるのだろう。
次の大会が今から楽しみだ。
きっと渡辺倫果選手自身も、そうに違いない。
Rinka Watanabe, Figure Skater
A three-year-old sees an Olympic gold medalist skating on TV and declares, “I want to do that.” Fast forward 20 years, and she is a figure skater competing at that very level—the only female skater to include three triple axels in her competition programs. On top of that, she is managing—and enjoying—her university studies as well.
It was a pleasure meeting Rinka Watanabe, whose record in figure skating is already illustrious. A few things from our conversation stayed with me.
Did you enjoy it when you first stepped onto the rink?
It just felt “natural.”
Why triple axels?
“I want to do something nobody in the world has done. That’s my personal standard—what I’m particular about.”
Do you get nervous going into competitions?
“Well, I have thousands of people there to watch me skate. All the attention is on me—isn’t that something?”
Doesn’t it feel torturously long waiting for the scores after a performance?
“There are routines afterward, so I kind of know when the points will be revealed.”
And when a performance doesn’t go as planned, isn’t it difficult to face the reporters right away?
“I’ve been trained for it.” Her coach says the first thing skaters do is reflect immediately after they finish. Yes—I can see how one is trained.
We spoke about her costume, choreography, music, training, practice, nutrition management, and so much more. The insider’s view was fascinating. But what stood out throughout was her composure, professionalism, drive, and discipline. There’s no doubt that competing at her level demands all of this.
I’m already looking forward to her next competition.
And I’m sure Rinka Watanabe is, too.
