法政大学国際高等学校生徒の皆さん

確実に前に進み、成長していく。きっと明るい未来が待っている。
法政大学国際高等学校の生徒４人と話をして、そんな印象を強く抱きました。２年生が２人、３年生が２人。特に３年生の２人については、大学の教室で質問をし、議論に参加し、思索を深めている姿が目に浮かぶようでした。

四人の生徒は、それぞれのプロジェクトの最終発表に至るまでの道のりについて語ってくれました。ある生徒にとっては、研究を導く問いを立てること、そして何度も実験を繰り返すという地道な作業が大きな課題でした。別の生徒にとっては、必要な文献を入手し、難解なテキストに向き合いながら読み進めていくことが大きな挑戦でした。また別の生徒にとっては、現地での活動の中で、効果的なコミュニケーションやチームワークを築いていくことが重要な課題となっていました。

中には、自分の慣れた環境から一歩踏み出す経験となった生徒もいます。海外で外国語を使って見知らぬ人に自分から話しかけたり、研究の場で質問をしたり、質問を受けてそれに答えたりすることに慣れ、その意味を見出していったり。また、この最終プロジェクトを、これまで積み重ねてきた努力の集大成として捉えている生徒もいました。いずれにしても、次の挑戦に向けてすでに歩み始めています。外国語の力をさらに磨くこと、あるいは自分なりのリーダーシップのあり方を探っていくことなどです。

教室でも、実験室でも、あるいは学校の外でも、そうした学びに深く身を置く中で、大きく成長してきたことがよく分かります。そして皆、多様な意味での「自由」が与えられているこの学校の中で、自分なりの拠り所を見つけ、あるいは育んできたのだと思います。

生徒たちを大学に迎える日が、今からとても楽しみです。

Steady progress. Continued growth. The future looks bright. These were the impressions I came away with after talking with four students from Hosei Kokusai High School—two in their second year and two in their third. I could almost see them, especially the two in their third year, in a university classroom, asking questions, engaging in discussions, contemplating and reflecting.

They shared the journeys leading to the final presentations of their projects. For one, the difficulty lay in formulating the research questions that would guide her research and the sheer tediousness involved in running multiple experiments. For another, the challenge lay in retrieving and working through difficult texts. For others, it involved fostering effective communication and teamwork in the field.

For some, it meant stepping outside their comfort zones—taking the initiative to speak to strangers in a foreign language while overseas, or becoming accustomed to and seeing the meaning in asking questions and taking questions in a research context. Others considered the final project as a culmination of constant efforts. In either case, they are ready to take on the next challenge—to hone a foreign language skill, to develop an effective leadership style.

I see how they have grown through immersing themselves in their learning—be it in the classroom, the lab, or outside of school. They all found or developed their anchor in a school that gives them freedom in the many senses of the word.

I just cannot wait to welcome them into university.
