退職者の皆さま

総長としての務めの中で、私がとりわけありがたく感じていることの一つは、本学の発展に長年ご尽力くださった教職員の皆さまに、直接感謝の気持ちをお伝えできることです。今回の式典にはご都合によりご出席いただけなかった方もいらっしゃいましたが、会場には、これまで親しくお付き合いしてきた方、共に歩んできた方、ご指導やご助言をいただいた方、そして陰ながら敬意を抱いてきた方々のお姿がありました。

式典後の昼食の席では、何名かの教職員の方々から、かつての取り組みやキャンパス整備の思い出、当時の大学運営の様子など、さまざまなお話をうかがうことができました。その一つひとつに、本学の歴史の厚みが感じられました。私自身も同じ時代を過ごしてきた者として、本学が決して平坦ではない時期を乗り越えてきたことを思い起こしました。そうした経験の積み重ねこそが、今日の本学を支えているのだとあらためて実感いたしました。

教育・研究への真摯な取り組みはもとより、学生支援や大学運営を支えてこられた日々のご尽力、大学をより良くするための率直なご意見、そして新たな挑戦への果敢な姿勢――そのすべてが、本学の礎となり、揺るぎない力を育んできました。その歩みに、総長としてはもちろんのこと、一人の同僚として、心より敬意と感謝を申し上げます。

新たに手にされた「自由」を、正直なところ少し羨ましく思います。しかし、それは皆さまが長年のご尽力によって勝ち取られたものにほかなりません。

One of the greatest privileges I enjoy as President of the university is the opportunity to personally thank the faculty and staff who have devoted so much of their professional lives to Hosei University. Although not all retirees were able to attend the ceremony, many were present—among them individuals I have known personally, worked alongside, received guidance and support from, or long admired from afar.

Following the ceremony, I had the pleasure of sharing lunch with several retirees. Our conversations were rich with stories—of programs launched, buildings constructed, and the distinctive ways of doing things in years past. Listening to these reflections, I was reminded that we have lived through many of the same decades, including some challenging periods for the university. Those years tested us, but they also shaped us.

It is through their teaching, research, dedication to students, thoughtful criticism, bold initiatives, and countless unseen efforts that our university has developed its resilience and strength. For that, I am deeply grateful—not only in my capacity as President, but also as a colleague.

I confess that I envy them their well-earned new “freedom.” Yet no one deserves it more.
