公認会計士試験合格者の在学生と卒業生

合格率7.4％という国家試験に、なぜ挑もうと思うのでしょうか。その試験に向けた長く厳しい準備を、どうやって続けることができるのでしょうか。そして、その先には何が待っているのでしょうか。CPA試験に合格し、その成功を私たちが祝った若者たちは、私の中にあったこれらすべての疑問に答えてくれました。

話を伺う中で、繰り返し浮かび上がってきたポイントが三つありました。いずれも、互いに深く結びついているように思われます。第一に、将来のCPAたちは、HAPP（Hosei Accounting Profession Program／会計専門職講座）が試験準備において非常に効果的なプログラムであったと口をそろえていました。これと密接に関わっているのが、共に学ぶ仲間の存在です。誰かと一緒に学ぶことで士気が高まり、過酷な勉強と試験を乗り越えるための連帯感が生まれました。そして何よりも重要だったのは、会計という分野そのものへの純粋な興味でした。ある合格者はこう語っていました。「簿記があまりにも面白くて、学び続けずにはいられなかったのです」。まさに、これらこそが成功の要素なのだと思います。

また、数名の若きCPAのご両親ともお会いしましたが、その支えが不可欠であったことは疑いようがありません。経済的な支援に加え、我が子を信じる気持ち、励まし、そして時にはお弁当付きの応援団としての役割――そうしたすべてが、この成果を支える土台となっていました。

CPAという職業は、「信頼」と深く結びついています。それには知識だけでなく――その点については、すでに十分に証明されていますが――高い倫理観と的確な意思決定力が求められます。若者たちを信じています。一人ひとりの未来に何が待っているのか、心から楽しみにしています。

Why would one even attempt to challenge a national exam with a passing rate of 7.4%? How does one sustain the effort required to prepare for such an exam? And what is there to look forward to after achieving it? The young people whose success we celebrated for passing the CPA exam answered all these questions for me.

Three points were repeatedly emphasized, and they may well be interconnected. The future CPAs found HAPP (Hosei Accounting Profession Program) to be an extremely effective program in preparing for the exam. Closely related to this was the importance of their study buddies (perhaps “study partners” or “peers”). Having someone to study with boosted morale and fostered a sense of camaraderie that helped them endure the grueling study process and the exam itself. Most importantly, perhaps, was a genuine interest in the subject. As one put it, “I found bookkeeping so interesting that I couldn’t help but continue learning more!” These, indeed, are the ingredients of success.

I also met the parents of a couple of these budding CPAs, and there is no doubt that their support was indispensable. Beyond financial support, there was trust in their children, encouragement, and the cheer-squad role that sometimes came with obento—together forming a foundation without which this achievement would not have been possible.

The CPA profession is built on trust. This requires not only knowledge—which these young people have clearly demonstrated—but also strong ethics and sound decision-making abilities. I trust them, and I am genuinely excited about what the future holds for them.
