世界の現場で実践知を体現する卒業生

ランチミーティングは実に「充実した」ひとときでした。料理が豊富だったという意味ではなく、むしろ、会話の豊かさと相手の深い省察に満ちていたからです。おかげで、心も頭も満たされ、大きな刺激を受けながら席を後にしました。

お話ししたのは、末藤千翔さん。法政女子高等学校（現・法政大学国際高等学校）を経て法学部国際政治学科を卒業し、現在は 国境なき医師団日本（MSF）で、アドボカシー／メディカルアフェアーズ／EPREP 部門のディレクター を務めています。法政大学時代の経験が、英国や米国への留学、フランスでの大学院生活、そして現在のキャリアへとどのようにつながっていったのかを伺いました。また、MSF が活動する現地でどのように自身の立ち位置を見極め、地域社会と関わりを築いているのか、これまで直面してきたさまざまな状況、現在の業務の具体的な内容、そして最も厳しかった経験などについても率直に語ってくれました。末藤さんはそれらを「とても厳しいけれど、それ以上にやりがいがある」と端的に表現していました。

話を伺いながら私が何度も心を動かされたのは、彼女の揺るがない軸と、それを支える確固たる価値観でした。熟考を重ねる姿勢、物事に対する明確なスタンス、そして自らの進むべき方向をしっかりと見据える力。彼女の仕事ぶりはもちろん、その立ち居振る舞いからも、私たちの憲章が掲げる「実践知」を体現していることが深く伝わってきました。

総長として、これほど誇らしく、そして未来に希望を感じた瞬間はありません。
 

It was a most substantial lunch—not because of the food, though there was plenty—but because of the richness of the conversation and the depth of reflection offered by my lunch partner. I left the table feeling full in every sense, and profoundly inspired.

My conversation partner was Chika Suefuji, who graduated first from Hosei Girls’ High School (now Kokusai High School), then from the Department of Global Politics in the Faculty of Law, and is now the Director of the Advocacy/Medical Affairs/EPREP Department at Médecins Sans Frontières Japan (MSF). We talked about her experiences at Hosei, how they connected to her studies abroad in the UK and the United States, her graduate study in France, and her current professional path. She spoke about how she positions herself and builds relationships with local communities in the countries where MSF serves, the wide range of situations she has encountered in the field, the concrete realities of her present work, and the toughest challenges she has faced—challenges she summed up as “immensely tough, but also immensely worth doing.”

What struck me most throughout our conversation was her unwavering inner compass and the core values that ground her work. Thoughtful and deeply reflective, she takes clear, principled stances and possesses a strong sense of direction. Both her professional practice and her very presence embody the “practical wisdom” articulated in our Charter.

As president of the university, I could not be more proud—nor more hopeful about the future.
