もう教壇に立つことはなくなりましたが、法政の学生たちには今でも時折会う機会があります。ときどき顔を出すゼミで、あるいはキャンパス内ですれ違うときに、そして大学や附属校でさまざまな活動に取り組む少人数の学生たちと、意図的に時間をともにするときにも。先週は、法政の外でまったく異なる二つの学生グループに出会う機会がありました。東京のサクラ・インターナショナルスクールの小学生たちと、福岡工業大学の理工系の学生たちです。
小学生たちは英語スピーチコンテストに向けて自信をもって練習に励み、災害時に必要な資源を真剣に考え、休み時間には静かに絵を描き、音楽の授業では楽しそうに歌っていました。壁に貼られた約束事から、動植物を描いた壁画まで——どこを見ても、学びと成長の機会にあふれていました。福岡で出会った大学生たちのうち、タイから来たばかりの数人は、まだ日本語を勉強中で英語で話せることに安堵した様子でした。一方で、日本人学生の二人は留学経験や今後の計画について話してくれ、そばで英語チューターが静かに耳を傾けていました。
法政の内外で学生と関わることは、教育者としての仕事の重みと喜びをあらためて感じさせてくれます。私たちは、経済的・制度的な制約の中でも教育の機会を提供しようと努めています。ときにその「最善」が十分ではないと感じることもありますが、それでも学生たちの姿や声に触れることが、もう一歩踏み出し、もう少し良い形を目指そうという原動力になります。そして結局のところ、こうした出会いの一つひとつが、学生たちの歩みに寄り添い、導き、支えることができるという、そのささやかな特権に感謝の気持ちを抱かせてくれるのです。
While I no longer teach, I still see Hosei students from time to time—at my seminar, which I visit occasionally; on campus in passing; and more deliberately in small groups involved in various activities at the university and our affiliated schools. Last week, I had the chance to meet two very different groups of students outside Hosei: elementary school students at Sakura International School in Tokyo and STEM students at the Fukuoka Institute of Technology.
I caught the elementary school students confidently rehearsing their English speeches for a contest, working earnestly to identify necessary resources in case of a disaster, quietly drawing during breaks, and singing joyfully in music class. From the agreed-upon rules posted on the wall to the paintings of animals and plants—everything seemed to be an occasion for learning and growth. A few of the more mature students I met in Fukuoka had just arrived from Thailand and seemed relieved to speak in English while still learning Japanese, while two Japanese students shared their study abroad experiences and plans, with their English tutor listening on.
Interacting with students—both inside and outside of Hosei—is always a reminder of the gravity and joy of being an educator. We provide educational opportunities to students amid financial and institutional constraints; we do our best, even when “our best” may not feel enough. Seeing students and hearing their voices serve as an impetus to stretch a little further, to do a little better. In the end, such encounters leave me grateful for the privilege of guiding and supporting our students, even briefly, along their journeys.
