主将であり、しかもMVP。やはりオーラがありますね。勝つことにこだわりながら、プレッシャーに負けず、自分の野球を貫く。そして、チーム全体をまとめ上げる――これは簡単なことではありません。法政大学硬式野球部の松下歩叶選手は、日米大学野球選手権でそれらすべてを成し遂げました。
野球の試合を観ると、やはり応援するチームには勝ってほしいし、応援する選手にはホームランを打ってほしい、完璧なピッチングを見せてほしいと思いますよね。負けると気分が沈んで、「こうすべき、ああすべき」と、つい“監督気分”になってしまうこともあります。
でも、選手の立場で考えるとどうでしょう。日々の厳しいトレーニング、体調管理、試合でのプレッシャー、負けた時の悔しさ、気持ちの切り替え、そしてその場での瞬時の調整……簡単なことではありません。それを続けることのすごさを、ぜひ評価していただきたいのです。
さらに、サポートする人たちの存在も忘れてはいけません。藤森創立さんは、野球部の主務として、松下選手をはじめ、経験や実績、体力に幅のある160名を支えています。「サポート」という一言では言い尽くせないほど、多岐にわたる業務を担っているのです。
この秋、神宮球場に足を運ぶ際は、ぜひ選手たちのプレーを楽しみにしながら応援してください。そして、彼らの日々の努力をしっかり褒めてあげてください。そしてもう一つ、表舞台に出ないマネジャーの皆さんにも、ぜひ感謝を。
Being both the team captain and MVP—there’s an undeniable aura that comes with that. Staying committed to winning while not succumbing to pressure, sticking to your own style of baseball, and on top of that, leading an entire team—none of this is easy. Hosei University’s baseball captain, Ayuto Matsushita, accomplished all of this during the Japan–U.S. University Baseball Championship.
When we watch a game, we naturally want our team to win. We want our favorite players to hit home runs, to pitch perfectly. And when the team loses, we feel frustrated, slipping into the mindset of an “armchair coach,” thinking, They should have done this, or that.
But think about it from the players’ perspective: the relentless training, constant physical conditioning, the pressure of the big stage, the sting of defeat, the need to reset their mindset, and the split-second adjustments during the game—it’s anything but easy. And the perseverance it takes to keep going? That deserves our recognition too.
Let’s also not forget the people who make it all possible. For example, Sotatsu Fujimori, the team’s manager, supports 160 players—each with different levels of experience, achievements, and physical ability. The term “support” hardly captures the complexity and breadth of his responsibilities.
So this fall, when you visit Jingu Stadium, cheer for our players and look forward to their best performance. Applaud not just the results on the field, but also the hard work they put in every single day. And one more thing—don’t forget to show your appreciation for the manager working tirelessly behind the scenes.
