教員として働きはじめた頃、学生たちが授業や先生、自分の学習の悩みについて、教員ではなく事務職員の方に相談することが多いと知って驚きました。最初の反応は、「なぜ先生に直接話さないの？」というものでした。でも、大学に少しずつ馴染み、事務の方々と一緒に仕事をするようになるにつれて、その理由がわかってきました。
最近、若手の職員お二人とお話しする機会がありましたが、学生に対するその真摯な姿勢と実際の支援の手厚さは、熱心な教員が学生に注ぐ思いに匹敵するものでした。法政大学の学生は、本当に恵まれた環境にいると自信を持って言えます。
この対話には、そのお二人だけでなく、ブランディング推進チームの素晴らしい職員の方々も加わってくださり、「大学は教育と研究の場であると同時に、事務職員にとっての職場でもある」という、あらためて言うまでもないようなことを思い出させてくれました。
私たちはよく、「自由」を本学の理念の中心に据えています。でもそれは、学生が自分の学びや将来を自由に切り拓く自由、教員が教育や研究において持つ自由だけではありません。事務職員が職種や部門を越えて、さらには教員とも自由に意見を交わせる、そんな自由も含まれているべきです。安心して意見を出し合える、開かれた職場環境は、イノベーションを促し、真の「所属感」を生む土壌にもなります。この若手の仲間たちは意欲的で創造力に富み、大学をより良くしていくことに心から取り組んでいます。
そして最後に、この楽しい対話から学んだことがもう一つ……スイカが苦手な人もいるんですね！（笑）
When I first started teaching, I was surprised to learn that students often turned to administrative staff when they had issues with classes, professors, or their studies. My initial reaction was: Why don’t they talk to the professors?! But as I became more integrated into the university and began working more closely with administrative staff, I started to understand why.
I had the chance to talk with two young staff members recently, and the genuine concern they showed—and the tangible support they offered—truly rivaled the care that the most devoted professors provide their students. I can say with confidence that Hosei University students are in very good hands.
In this conversation, which included not only these two impressive staff members but also a few outstanding colleagues from the Branding Team, I was reminded—obvious though it may seem—that the university is not only a place of research and education, but also a workplace for our administrative staff.
We often speak of “freedom” as central to our university’s ethos. But this isn’t just the freedom students enjoy in learning and shaping their futures, or the freedom professors enjoy in teaching and research. It must also include the freedom for administrative staff to engage in the exchange of ideas—not only across roles and departments, but also in dialogue with the teaching faculty. A safe and open workplace fosters both innovation and a genuine sense of belonging. These young colleagues are motivated, creative, and genuinely dedicated to strengthening the university.
One last thing I learned from this most enjoyable discussion: not everyone enjoys watermelon! (LOL)
