李先生とゼミ生

社会学部メディア社会学科の李先生と、先生の４名のゼミ生の皆さんとお話しする機会をいただきました。私にとって大変「刺激的」な時間でした。先生の教育方針や、学生の皆さんの学びに向き合う姿勢そのものが、まさに教育の本質ではないかと感じました。
　
先生のゼミ案内には「今すぐに役立つ知識やスキルの習得を目的としていません」とありますが、ゼミでの学びを通じて、学生は「真に自由な思考と行動を貫きとおす自立した市民」となるための土台を築いているのではないでしょうか。それは、どこにいても、どのような状況でも生き抜く力につながるものだと思います。
特に印象的だったのは、学生の皆さんが物事を非常に真剣に考えていることです。いわゆる「常識」に安易にとらわれるのではなく、物事を根本から問い直そうとしている。そのうえで、相手の話を丁寧に聞き、自分の考えを丁寧に言葉にする——その繰り返しのプロセスの中で、自分自身の意見を形成していく姿が強く心に残りました。
また、先生の果たす役割の重要性も強く感じました。学生が自由に探究できる環境を整えつつ、適切な「刺激」を与えていく。そのような関わりの中で、学生の皆さんが大きく成長していくのだと感じました。
 

I had the opportunity to speak with Professor Li from the Department of Media and Communication Studies in the Faculty of Social Sciences, along with four students from his seminar. For me, it was a truly stimulating experience. Professor Li’s educational philosophy, as well as the way his students engage with learning, struck me as representing the very essence of education.
In the seminar description, Professor Li writes that “acquiring knowledge or skills that are immediately useful” is not a goal of the seminar. Yet through the learning that takes place in the seminar, I felt that students are building the foundation to become independent citizens capable of thinking and acting freely. In doing so, they develop the ability to navigate and thrive in any environment.
What impressed me most was the seriousness with which the students think. Rather than being bound by conventional “common sense,” they try to examine issues “at the root,” so to speak. They listen carefully to others and express their own ideas thoughtfully. Through this repeated process, they gradually form well-considered perspectives of their own.
I was also reminded of the importance of the professor’s role in supporting students’ free exploration while providing appropriate intellectual stimulation. Through this kind of engagement, I felt that the students grow in meaningful and substantial ways.
