司法試験合格者たち

部屋に入ると、すでに皆さんが記念撮影のように席についておられました。一瞬、遅れてしまったかと思いましたが、リハーサルだと聞いてほっとしました。私はこの行事には数年来参加していますが、総長として臨むのは今回が初めてで、難関の司法試験を突破された皆さんと写真を撮らせていただく機会に恵まれました。
名札がなくてもすぐに分かったと思います。それほど皆さんは、自信に満ち、生き生きとした表情をしておられました。早く社会に出て何かを成し遂げたい、世の中に貢献したい――そんな思いが伝わってくるようでした。もっとも、来年の３月からは１年間の研修が待っていますが。
どのような職業であっても、自分のためだけにある仕事などありません。とりわけ法曹の道に進む人々の仕事は、社会の制度そのもの、そしてその中で生きる人々の人生と深く結びついています。そこには、確かな判断力と、生涯にわたる学びが求められます。短いひとときではありましたが、今回の出会いを通して、私はこの先を担う皆さんに、そして私たちの未来を託してよいのだという思いを強くしました。

When I walked into the room, everyone was already seated for what looked like a group photo. I was relieved to learn it was only a rehearsal. Though I have attended this event for several years, it was my first time as President, and I had the pleasure of taking photos with those who had passed the formidable National Bar Examination.
Even without name tags, I would have recognized them immediately. They looked confident and full of anticipation, eager to step into the world and make a difference—though a year-long training program awaits them from next March.
No profession exists for personal benefit alone. This is especially true for those entering the legal profession, whose work is woven into the very framework that governs society and the lives of the people within it. It is a responsibility that demands sound judgment and lifelong learning. This brief encounter reassured me that we can place our trust—and our hopes—in their generation for a brighter future.
