ボランティアセンターVSP（ボランティア支援プロジェクト）の2名の学生スタッフとお話ししているとき、どうしても「自由を生き抜く実践知」という言葉が頭から離れませんでした。お二人の活動は、まさに本学が大切にしている理念を体現しており、「どこでも生き抜く力を備えた」フロントランナーこそ、本学が育てていきたい姿そのものだと感じました。
「みんなの生理研修」でお二人が印象に残ったと話してくれたのは、講演の中で触れられていた「優しさの半分は知識」という言葉でした。「正しい知識」や「もっと知りたいという姿勢」が、お二人の活動の芯にあると感じました。自分自身や身の回りへの観察・共感から問題を見出し、解決のために企画し、周囲を巻き込みながら活動している。その結果、参加者の中から「自分も企画に関わりたい」と思う人が生まれる。参加するだけでは得られない気づきや喜び。問題を発見したときにすぐに解決を考え、企画や活動に参加するワクワク感、そして「次はもっとやりたい」という意欲。こうした経験を社会に出ても活かし、より良い社会をつくっていきたいという思いが、お二人の言葉から伝わってきました。
以前、私が「法政らしさ」についてお話しした講演を聞いて、「法政の学生であること、卒業生であることに誇りを感じた」と言ってくださった方々がいました。私自身も、総長として、皆さんの在学中や卒業後の活躍を誇らしく思っています。そして、大学をより良くし、大学を通して社会をより良くしていきたいという気持ちが一層強くなります。本当に、ありがとうございます。
When I had the opportunity to speak with two student staff members from the Volunteer Support Project (VSP) at our Volunteer Center, the phrase “practical wisdom to live out freedom” kept coming to mind. Their work truly embodies the ideals our university values. I felt that they represent precisely the kind of individuals we aspire to nurture—front-runners equipped with the strength to live and thrive anywhere.
In talking about the “Menstrual Health for Everyone” workshop, they mentioned that what left the deepest impression on them was the phrase, “Half of kindness is knowledge,” which came up during the lecture. I sensed that their activities are deeply grounded in this idea—the importance of possessing accurate knowledge and maintaining a genuine curiosity to learn more. They identify issues through observation and empathy toward themselves and those around them, launch projects to address those issues, and engage others in the process. As a result, participants are inspired to get involved themselves, discovering the joy and insight that go beyond simply taking part. The excitement of tackling problems, of participating in new initiatives, and of wanting to take the next step—they will no doubt carry forward these experiences into society to help build a better world.
In previous talks where I spoke about the spirit of Hosei University, some people told me that it made them proud to be Hosei students and alumni. As President, I too feel great pride in all that our students and graduates accomplish, both during their time at the university and beyond. Their passion also inspires me to make our university—and through it, our society—an even better place.
