家族と離れ、常にその安否を気遣いながらも、同時に「普通の生活」を送ろうと努めることは、想像を超えるほど大変なことです。しかし、それこそが家族が最も願っていることでもあります。これは、法政大学で学んでいるウクライナからの4人の学生が直面してきた現実です。日本で充実した生活を送りつつ、祖国の家族とつながり続けることは決して容易ではありません。
このたび、その学生たちと近況を語り合う機会を得ました。日本語力の向上、学業への情熱、そして将来への夢を語る姿に心を動かされました。東京のお気に入りのカフェの話で盛り上がったり、韓国の刑事ドラマを紹介し合ったり、インターンシップや課外活動の経験、日本で働くことへの考え、さらには法政大学での学生生活についても語り合いました。
これらの学生と接することで、数年前に法政大学が受け入れを決断したことの意義を改めて感じました。困難で不確実な状況の中でも最善を尽くし続ける学生たちの姿は、大きな励ましとなっています。

It’s hard to imagine being separated from your family, worrying constantly about their safety, and at the same time trying to lead a “normal” life elsewhere—because that is what your family most wishes for you. This has been the reality for the four students from Ukraine studying at Hosei University. They are doing their best to build full lives here in Japan while staying closely connected with their loved ones back home, and that is no easy feat.
I was grateful for the chance to catch up with them. It was moving to see how much their Japanese proficiency has improved, how passionately they are pursuing their studies, and how vividly they spoke of their dreams for the future. Our conversations ranged widely—we compared notes on favorite cafés in Tokyo, exchanged recommendations on Korean detective dramas, discussed their internship and other extracurricular experiences, as well as their thoughts on working in Japan, and of course, their university life at Hosei.
These bright young people reminded me once again that it was the right decision for Hosei to open its doors to them a few years ago. Their continued efforts to make the best of a difficult and uncertain situation are deeply inspiring.
