ベトナムで開催された法政大学日本語スピーチコンテスト（ベトナム）の入賞者4人（大学生2人と高校生2人）と、異文化理解プログラム*に参加し、コンテストの準備をサポートしてくれ本学の学生2人も一緒にお会いする機会がありました。
アニメをきっかけに日本語や日本文化を学び始めた人もいるのは自然なことですが、それはあくまで始まりです。言語の「音」、アニメが生まれる文化、そして海外で学ぶという選択肢……日本や日本語に最初に触れたときから広がる可能性は無限です。皆さんの質問をきっかけに、私が学生に対する考えや学問の道を振り返ることができ、自分の原点である、学者や教育者としての日々と再びつながることができました。そのことに、私は心から感謝しています。
この交流を楽しむだけでなく、入賞者の皆さんや本学の2人の学生に、将来性を感じました。これらの多言語を操る学生たちは、再び私にとって、外国語を学ぶ価値を改めて思い出させてくれました。外国語を話せるだけではなく、それを何に使えるか、ということこそが大切です。私自身の経験とも深く共鳴する考えです。
I had the opportunity to meet with four winners—two university students and two high school students—from the Japanese Speech Contest held in Vietnam, along with two of our own students who participated in the Program for Cross-Cultural Understanding* and supported the Vietnamese students in preparing for the contest.
It’s not surprising that some began learning Japanese through anime, but this was only the starting point. The “sound” of the language, the culture in which the anime is created, and the option of studying abroad in this foreign land… the possibilities that unfold from that initial contact with Japan or the Japanese language are endless. Their questions about my observations of students and my academic path allowed me to step back from my current role and reconnect with the roots of my journey—my days as an academic and educator—and for that, I was truly grateful.
Not only did I enjoy the exchange, but I also saw great potential in all the winners, as well as in our two students. These multilingual students once again reminded me of the value of learning a foreign language. It’s not just about being able to speak another language, but about what you can do with it. That message definitely resonates with my own experiences.
