数週間前、ちょっとしたデジャヴのような瞬間がありました。朝早く、猫が朝ごはんを食べ終わるのを待ちながらNHKニュースを見ていたら、同僚のグレゴリー・ケズナジャット先生の小説『トラジェクトリー』が芥川賞にノミネートされたというニュースが流れてきたんです！思わず叫びそうになったのですが、繊細なうちの猫のために気持ちを抑えました（笑）。実は、数年前に彼の『開墾地』が同じく芥川賞にノミネートされたときも、まったく同じ状況でニュースを見ていて、同じように興奮したことを思い出しました。
そして今回、インタビュー動画の制作をきっかけに、あらためて彼とやり取りできたのも嬉しい出来事でした。彼の作品に描かれているさまざまな経験には、同じ「外国人」、とくに「長年日本にいる外国人」として、とても共感するところがあります。また、「文化」「アイデンティティ」「言語」「グローバル」といった問いが、作品を通じて丁寧に掘り下げられており、読むたびに多くのことを考えさせられます。
何より、彼の文章が本当に好きです。

I had a déjà vu moment a couple of weeks ago. I was watching the early morning NHK news while waiting for my cat to finish his breakfast, when I saw the announcement that Trajectory, written by my colleague Gregory Khezrnejat, had been nominated for the Akutagawa Prize! I was so excited I nearly screamed—but had to stay calm for the sake of my sensitive cat. I had a similar moment a few years ago when Kaikonchi was nominated for the same prize.
It was a real pleasure to reconnect with Greg for a short Instagram interview. Many of the experiences he describes in his writing resonate with me as a fellow foreigner—especially one who’s been in Japan for a long time. I also found his reflections on culture, identity, language, and the idea of the “global” deeply thought-provoking.
Above all, I just love the way he writes.
