就任から1か月余りが経ちました。この短期間の中で、数多くの会議で議長を務め、さまざまな団体や組織に向けたメッセージなどを複数執筆し、国内外の大学関係者と面会し、日本と香港の新聞社から取材を受けました。また、大学および付属校の新任教職員、新入生、さらには高校生の皆さんに対して、挨拶の言葉を述べたり、対話をしたりする機会もありました。

こうした多忙さや初めての業務の連続にもかかわらず、意外にも、自分が想像していたほどの疲れやストレスを感じることはありませんでした。その大きな理由の一つは、事務職員の皆さんによるきめ細やかなサポートにあると思います。会議や取材、小規模から大規模にわたる各種イベントが円滑に実施される背景には、いわば「舞台裏」での周到な準備や調整があります。これらの仕事はもっと評価されるべきであり、より可視化されるべきだと感じています。

もう一つの理由は、特に若い世代との、いくつかのかけがえのない出会いから得たエネルギーにあります。新規採用の事務職員の皆さんとの研修も楽しく、有意義なひとときでしたし、多摩キャンパスで出会ったオープンキャンパス学生スタッフとのちょっとした会話にも元気をもらいました。付属高校の生徒さんたちがIBコースについて、「簡単な正解に飛びつかず、批判的に考えることを大切にしている」と語ってくれたことにも感銘を受けました。

生徒の皆さんから寄せられた問いも、非常に印象的でした。

• 「私は物事に対して強い意見を持つことが多いのですが、同時に他の視点から見ることの大切さも感じています。どうしたらそれができるのでしょうか？」
• 「自分が本当に関心を持っていることを追求する中で、壁にぶつかったことはありますか？」

また、「大学生になるということ」をテーマにした講演の後には、協定校の生徒の皆さんから、女子大学の意義や女子校の強み、本学の学生が大学生活を送るうえで拠り所にしている「コンパス」のようなものについて、鋭い質問が寄せられました。

そして最後に——おそらくこれが最も大きな理由かもしれませんが——良くも悪くも、揺るがない価値観や信念を保ちつつも、必要以上に自分に固執しないように心がけています。ローマ教皇フランシスコ（故人）はかつてこう語っています。「権力が大きければ大きいほど、その行動が他者に与える影響も大きくなり、謙虚に行動する責任も重くなる。もしそれを忘れれば、自分を滅ぼし、他者をも滅ぼしてしまう」と。

It has been just over a month since I assumed office. In that short time, I have chaired numerous meetings, written a good number of messages and a short essay for different groups and organizations, met with representatives from domestic and international institutions, given interviews to newspapers in Japan and Hong Kong, and had opportunities both to deliver addresses and to engage in conversation with incoming students, newly hired faculty and staff from the university and its affiliated schools, as well as high school students. To my own surprise, despite the busyness and the series of unfamiliar tasks, I didn’t feel as tired or stressed as I had expected.

A major reason for that is undoubtedly the meticulous support of our administrative staff. The behind-the-scenes work that enables these meetings, interviews, and events—large and small—to take place deserves not only recognition but greater visibility.

Another reason is the energy I’ve drawn from several precious moments of connection, especially with young people. I thoroughly enjoyed the training session with newly hired administrative staff, as well as a brief chat with student staff during the Open Campus event at Tama Campus. I was also impressed by how students from our affiliated high school described their IB course as encouraging them to think critically and not settle for a single, easy answer. I appreciated the thoughtful questions they asked:

• “I tend to have strong opinions, but I know I should also consider different perspectives. How can I do that?”
• “Have you ever hit a wall in pursuing something you deeply care about?”

Similarly, after a talk on “Becoming a University Student,” students from our partner school posed insightful questions about the role of women’s universities, the unique strengths of girls’ schools, and the internal “compasses” that guide Hosei students during their time at university.

And finally—perhaps most importantly—for better or worse, though I stand by my core values, I don’t take myself too seriously. As the late Pope Francis once said, “The more powerful you are, the more your actions will have an impact on people, the more responsible you are to act humbly. If you don’t, your power will ruin you and ruin the other.”
