As humanity faces a variety of unprecedented and complex challenges on a global scale, such as the global environmental problems seen in the recent rapid climate change and the COVID-19 pandemic, there are high expectations for research institutions such as universities and their researchers to contribute to solving these problems not only through conventional specialized research methods but also through interdisciplinary approaches, and through international collaboration.

To this end, Professor Yasuyuki Kono and Professor Emeritus Attachai Jintrawet will speak on the theme of "Beyond Borders: How to contribute to the achievement of the SDGs by driving interdisciplinary & international collaborative research". They will discuss the significance and prospects of interdisciplinary & international collaborative research, challenges and synergies of integrating natural sciences and humanities/social sciences, and deliver a message to the next generation of researchers, drawing on their research activities and real-world experiences. The session will conclude with a Q&A session, which we hope will provide an opportunity for active and constructive discussions on how researchers in the Asia-Pacific region can drive interdisciplinary research and international collaborative research and how they can contribute to solving global issues

Professor Emeritus Attachai Jintrawet received a B.Sc. in agriculture from Khon Kaen University, Khon Kaen, Thailand, a M.S. in Agronomy & Soil Science from Auburn University, Auburn, Alabama, USA and a Ph.D. in Agronomy & Soil Science, University of Hawaii at Manoa, Honolulu, Hawaii, USA. His research and innovations centered around systems approaches to improve agricultural resource management. Major research innovations are Decision Support Systems for Agricultural Resource Management (DSSARM) tools. These tools combine spatial databases and crop simulation models that allow users to assess various alternatives for better agricultural resource management under small farm settings. He’s also coordinated the precision agriculture research network under funding by the Thailand Research Fund (TRF) agency. Since retirement in 2020, his research interests are focusing on seasonal crop production systems with local communities and Government agencies at the watershed levels using database, models, geo-informatics systems. He is a member of a research team under the Thailand Development Research Institute. He is a member of technical advisory teams for Department of Agriculture, Chiang Mai Young Smart Farmer Association and Agricultural Research Development Agency.

Professor Emeritus Attachai Jintrawet

Professor Yasuyuki Kono is an agricultural engineer in education and was awarded a Doctor of Agriculture degree by the University of Tokyo in 1986, and joined Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS) in 1987. He also worked at Asian Institute of Technology from 1992 to 1994. He served as director of CSEAS from 2014 to 2018. As vice-president for international strategy, he is in charge of promoting and coordinating the university’s international research and education activities. These include the activities of the university’s overseas centers in Europe, ASEAN, and North America, strategic partnerships, on-site laboratories, and student mobility programs. His research fields are natural resources management and human-nature interactions in Southeast Asia. For these, he has a rich experiences of field work in Southeast Asian countries including Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar and Indonesia, in addition to the southern part of China and India. Recently, together with colleagues from diverse disciplines such as historian, anthropologist, economist, political scientists, ecologist, earth scientist and medical scientist, he is exploring the new research field of sustainable humanosphere studies, which aims to embed nature and environment into the dialogue about science and society. He is currently head of a large-scale international program called the Japan-ASEAN Science, Technology and Innovation Platform (JASTIP), in which capacity he promotes interdisciplinary studies and transdisciplinary activities with colleagues in ASEAN countries.
