GIS’ English-based liberal arts education serves as a solid foundation for students to thrive globally at both domestic Japanese and foreign-affiliated companies. The GIS Global Leadership Initiative, or GGLI, serves as an organization that welcomes professionals active in various industries and fields as fellows, supporting the careers of GIS students.

The GIS, or Global and Interdisciplinary Studies, program does not offer courses listed under “general education.” Each course is specialized; designed to deepen students’ interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary knowledge, with a focus on the humanities, social sciences, and business administration. Students follow a systematic course of study though courses classified at the 100-400 levels. By selecting courses based on their interests, and studying through our world class curriculum, students develop logical reasoning skills and flexible thinking.
OAS is a program that allows students to study regular undergraduate courses for 4 months (short-term) or 10 months (long-term) at a partner university in the United States, UK, Canada, or New Zealand during the second semester of their sophomore year, or first semester of their junior year. While participation in OAS is not mandatory, it serves to deepen students’ cross-cultural understandings and helps them develop the common sense expected of global citizens. GIS provides all participating students with a standard scholarship ranging between 500,000 yen for short term programs, and 1,000,000 yen for long term. Additionally, students with outstanding academic performance can receive an additional 100,000-200,000 yen for short term programs, and 100,000-400,000 for long term.
Every year, many GIS students also choose to participate in Hosei University’s “Study Abroad” program. It is possible to participate in both this program, and OAS, and graduate within four years. The Study Abroad program offers students the generous opportunity to waive their tuition fees at their host university, as well as receive scholarships.
If your time while studying abroad at a university that meets certain criteria as a self-funded student, the credits you earn can be applied toward the credits required for graduation from the GIS program. In addition, scholarships are awarded under a special program.
GIS has also introduced an Early Graduation Program that allows students to graduate in three years. This program is designed to support students wanting to pursue graduate studies abroad, or enter the workforce early, and is specifically intended for students with outstanding academic performance. By shortening the duration of enrollment by a year, the program also offers the benefit of reducing the costs associated with college fees, such as tuition.
