| Education and Experience/教育・経験 | Miui Watanabe received her B.A. in History (2010) and M.A. in Medieval Studies (2012) from the University of York, UK. In 2012, she entered the doctoral programme in the Department of Language and Information Sciences at the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, the University of Tokyo, completing all required coursework. She subsequently earned her Ph.D. in English from the University of St Andrews in 2020. Her doctoral dissertation examined constructions of English national identity in thirteenth- and fourteenth-century Middle English romance. Following the completion of her Ph.D., she returned to Japan, where she has taught English literature and related subjects at several universities. |
| Research Interests/研究関心 | Professor Watanabe’s research focuses on Middle English literature, with particular attention to the relationship between genre, cultural identity, and the literary imagination. She examines how medieval literary texts negotiate questions of national, religious, and cultural belonging, arguing that these narratives function as sites in which identity is constructed, contested, and reconfigured. A central concern of her work is the representation of otherness and the instability of identity categories, including moments of hybridity that complicate simple oppositions such as East and West. In addition, she pursues a secondary research strand on marvels and monstrosity in literature and historiography, exploring the supernatural as a marker of cultural anxiety surrounding race, religion, gender, and politics. |
略歴（日本語）
英国ヨーク大学にて歴史学の学士号（2010年）および中世学の修士号（2012年）を取得。2012年に東京大学大学院総合文化研究科言語情報科学専攻博士課程に進学（満期退学）。2020年、セント・アンドリューズ大学（英国）にて英文学の博士号を取得。博士論文では、中英語ロマンスを中心に、中世イングランドならびにスコットランドにおけるナショナル・アイデンティティの文学的表象を考察した。現在は中英語文学を主な研究対象とし、文化的アイデンティティや他者表象、怪異・怪物表象に関する研究論文を執筆中。2026年4月より、法政大学グローバル教養学部に助教として着任。
