GISの強みは、特定の分野にとらわれることなく、多様な学問領域を横断的に学べる点にあると思います。自分の関心分野がまだ定まっていなかった学生時代の私にとって、英語でビジネス、観光、言語学など幅広い分野を学ぶことができたのは、大変貴重な経験でした。

大学在学中は留学こそしませんでしたが、GISの授業一つひとつに真摯に向き合い、丁寧に学ぶことを心掛けていました。また、自分がもともとあまり関心を持っていなかった分野の授業にも積極的に挑戦し、知見や視野を広げるよう努めていました。

One of the greatest strengths of GIS is that it allows students to explore a wide range of academic disciplines without being confined to a single field. As I had not yet decided on a specific area of interest during my student years, I found it incredibly valuable to study diverse subjects such as business, tourism, and linguistics, all in English.

Although I did not study abroad during my time at university, I made a conscious effort to approach each GIS course with sincerity and dedication. I also actively enrolled in classes outside my primary interests, believing that exposure to unfamiliar fields would help broaden both my knowledge and perspective.

国籍や性別、障がいの有無にかかわらず、働きたいと願うすべての人が自分らしく活躍できる社会を実現したいと考え、企業に対してダイバーシティ経営の推進などの政策を展開している経済産業省に関心を持ちました。

また、経済産業省はこうした企業向けの政策に加え、通商交渉やエネルギー政策など、幅広い分野を所管する省庁でもあります。一つの専門分野に限定されることなく、多様なテーマに携わることができる点に魅力を感じました。

こうした幅広い分野を横断的に扱う環境は、GISの学びのスタイルとも共通しており、強い親和性を感じたことも経済産業省を志望した理由の一つです。

I became interested in the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) because I wanted to contribute to building a society where everyone who wishes to work can thrive regardless of their nationality, gender, or disability. METI’s efforts to promote diversity and inclusion in corporate management particularly resonated with me.

At the same time, METI is responsible for a wide range of policy areas beyond corporate affairs, including international trade negotiations and energy policy. I was drawn to the opportunity to engage with diverse issues rather than being confined to a single area of specialization.

I also felt a strong connection between METI and GIS in this regard. Just as GIS encourages students to study across disciplines and develop a broad perspective, METI offers an environment where people can work on a variety of topics and challenges. This similarity was one of the reasons I decided to pursue a career at METI.

GISで培った国際的な視点や幅広い分野への関心もあり、入省後は資源エネルギー庁国際課に配属されました。国際課では、課全体の取りまとめや対外的な窓口業務などを担当しました。

その後、同じく資源エネルギー庁の燃料供給基盤整備課へ異動し、こちらでも課の取りまとめ業務に携わりました。現在は社会人2年目となり、再び資源エネルギー庁国際課に所属し、主に中東地域を担当しています。

中東情勢が不安定さを増す中、エネルギー安全保障の重要性はこれまで以上に高まっています。そうした時期に中東担当としてエネルギー分野の業務に携わることができるのは非常に貴重な経験であり、大きなやりがいを感じています。

Thanks in part to the international perspective and broad academic interests I developed at GIS, I was assigned to the International Affairs Division of the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy. There, I was responsible for coordinating the division’s activities and serving as a point of contact for external stakeholders.

I was later transferred to the Fuel Supply Infrastructure Policy Division, where I continued to work on coordination and serving as a contact point for the division. Now in my second year as a government official, I have returned to the International Affairs Division and am primarily responsible for matters related to the Middle East.

As the situation in the Middle East becomes increasingly unstable, the importance of energy security has grown more than ever. Having the opportunity to work on energy policy as the person responsible for this region at such a critical time is an extremely valuable experience, and I find the work both meaningful and rewarding.

まず、GISでは課題を通じて長文の英語文献や資料を数多く読む機会があったため、現在、外国政府から送られてくる英文資料を読む際にも大きく役立っていると感じています。GISで読んでいた文献に比べると、多くの文書が比較的短く感じられるほどです（笑）。

また、GISでは前述のとおり、ビジネスや観光、言語学など多様な分野を学ぶことができました。そのため、新しい分野や業務に対する適応力が自然と身についたと感じています。

私は現在社会人2年目ですが、すでに3つ目のポストを経験しています。異動の多い組織であるからこそ、分野横断的な学びを重視するGISで培った柔軟性や、新しい知識を吸収する姿勢は、日々の業務に大いに生かされていると感じています。

First, GIS exposed me to a large number of lengthy academic papers and reading assignments in English, which has proven to be extremely helpful in my current work. In fact, compared with some of the materials I read at GIS, many of the documents I receive from foreign governments now feel relatively short!

In addition, as I mentioned earlier, GIS allowed me to study a wide variety of subjects, including business, tourism, and linguistics. I believe this interdisciplinary experience helped me develop the flexibility to adapt to new fields and unfamiliar tasks.

Although I am only in my second year as a government official, I am already serving in my third position. Because personnel rotations are common in my organization, the flexibility I developed at GIS has been invaluable in my day-to-day work. Looking back, I feel that the interdisciplinary and adaptive mindset fostered by GIS has prepared me well for a career that requires continuous learning and adjustment.

GISでの経験は、現在の社会人生活にとても生かされていると感じています。語学力はもちろんのこと、多様な分野を幅広く学んだ経験が、自身の柔軟性や新しい環境への適応力を育ててくれたと思います。

また、GISで出会った友人たちは今でもかけがえのない存在です。就職活動の際にはもちろん、社会人になった現在もお互いに刺激を受けながら切磋琢磨することができています。

GISは、学びの場としてだけでなく、大切な仲間と出会う場であり、自分自身の将来のビジョンを見つける場でもあります。私にとっては、その後の人生につながる多くの出会いや経験を得ることができた非常に貴重な場所でした。

勉強は大変なことも多いと思いますが、健康を第一に、ぜひ充実した学生生活を送ってください。みなさんのこれからの挑戦を応援しています。

My experience at GIS continues to have a significant impact on my professional life today. Not only did it help me develop my English language skills, but studying a wide range of subjects also fostered the flexibility and adaptability that are essential in new environments and unfamiliar fields.

The friendships I built at GIS are also something I deeply value. My classmates were important during my job search, and even now, as working professionals, we continue to inspire and motivate one another.

GIS is not only a place for academic learning, but also a place where you can meet lifelong friends and discover your own vision for the future. For me, it was an incredibly valuable environment that provided experiences and connections that continue to shape my life today.
