【学部ニュース】英語で学び、世界へ――GISから英国大学院へ、そしてロンドンの教育現場へ（常久琴音さん）

常久さん：高校生の時、国際科という学科で学んでおり、英語を勉強すること、異文化を学ぶことに大変興味がありました。GISは全ての授業が英語で行われていることと、共に学ぶ学生や教授の国籍が幅広いという点に魅力を感じ、GISを志望しました。
When I was in high school, I was part of an international studies program, and I was really interested in studying English and other cultures. I chose to apply to GIS because I was drawn to the fact that all classes are taught in English, and the faculty members come from all over the world.

常久さん：GISでの学びで、自分の視野が確実に広がったと感じています。様々なバッググラウンドを持つ学生とコミュニケーションを取ったことで、今まで自分が知らなかった文化を多く知ることができました。また、イギリス、韓国、マレーシアなど海外出身の教授や海外経験のある日本人教授の講義を受けることにより、高校まででは学んだことのなかった他国目線の世界の歴史や文化、人前で堂々と話すスキルを身につけることができました。GISでの学びで、海外の大学院で学んでみたい、そして海外に住んでみたいという目標ができました。自分の人生の中でも1番のターニングポイントになったと思います。
I feel that GIS definitely broadened my horizons. By interacting with students with diverse backgrounds, I was able to learn about cultures I hadn’t known before, and by taking classes taught by professors from countries like the UK, South Korea, and Malaysia in addition to Japanese professors, I learned about world history and culture from perspectives I hadn’t encountered in high school. It helped me develop the confidence to speak publicly. My time at GIS inspired me to pursue a master’s degree abroad and live overseas. I truly believe this has been a major turning point in my life.

GIS事務室：そうですね。GISでは、外国籍の教員が半数以上を占めています。日本人教員についても、多くが海外の大学院を修了していたり、海外での勤務経験があります。こうした多様な文化が交わる環境で学べることも、GISならではの魅力のひとつです。
Right, more than half of our faculty are foreign nationals. Even many of our Japanese faculty members have completed graduate studies abroad, or have work experience overseas. Being able to study in environments where diverse people and cultures intersect is one of the most unique attributes of GIS.

常久さん：元々は卒業後日本での就職を検討していましたが、当時コロナの影響もありオンライン授業も多かったことから、このまま学生を終えていいのか悩んでいました。ゼミでイギリス文化文学(British Culture and Literature)を選択し、イギリス英語やイギリスの文化に大変興味があったことから、イギリスの大学院に進学して更に自分の視野を広げたい、新たな経験をしたいと思いイギリスの大学院進学を決めました。
Originally, I was going to find a job in Japan after graduation, but because of the pandemic–which meant I was taking a lot of online classes at the time–I was on the fence about whether or not I should just finish my studies the way they were. I took a seminar on British Culture and Literature at GIS. That got me interested in British English and British culture, and I decided to pursue a master’s degree in the UK to broaden my horizons further, experience new things.

常久さん：大学院では、英語教授法を学びました。バース大学の英語教授法では英語を教えるというより世界中の英語のアクセント、セオリー、教育学などを学びました。授業はディスカッションが多く、特に自分のこれまでの英語学習の経験や自分の国の英語教育などを、クラスメイトと話したり発表することが多かったです。
I studied English language teaching. The program at the University of Bath focused less on the teaching of English itself, and more on English accents from around the world, theory around that, and pedagogy. My classes involved a lot of discussion, and I would often talk with my classmates or give presentations about my personal experiences learning English, and English education, in my home country. 

常久さん：ロンドンでの生活は自分には合っていると感じています。フレンドリーで親切な人が多く、毎日良い気分で生活することができています。バスが時間通りに来なかったり、医療制度が日本と比べて充実していなかったり、ストレスに感じることももちろん多くありますが、それ以上に柔軟性のある文化やいろいろな人種の方が共存しているロンドンがとても好きです。
I think that life in London suits me well. People are friendly and kind here, and I spend my day-to-day life in a good mood. There are plenty of things that can be stressful; buses not running on time, or the healthcare system not being as comprehensive as I'm used to in Japan. But more than anything, I really love London for its flexible culture, and the way that people of all different ethnicities can coexist here. 

常久さん：様々なバッググラウンドを持った学生とともに学びたい人、英語で授業を受けてみたい人、英語でのコミュニケーション能力を向上させたい人、海外の大学院に進みたい人におすすめです。
I really recommend it to people who want to study alongside students from diverse backgrounds, those who want to take classes in English, or wish to improve their English communication skills, and people who want to attend graduate school abroad.
