The Fukuoka Seminar (Business Management) held its annual retreat in Chichibu from Monday, September 15th to Wednesday, September 17th, 2025.
On the first day of the retreat, the customary graduation thesis progress presentations were held. The fourth-year students presented their research-to-date and received lively, constructive feedback from Professor Fukuoka and fellow seminar members. Based on the class’s feedback and input, the presenters will further refine their projects and begin full-scale data collection from October onwards. After a process of analysis, these fourth-year students will advance their research with the aim of submitting a draft seminar thesis by the end of December 2025.
During the retreat, the third-year students also presented their graduation thesis topic proposals based on their own research interests. The variety and originality of the topics presented had the entire retreat looking forward to the full-scale presentations next year.
Amidst the academic activities, the seminar members also participated in various local experiences unique to Chichibu, such as rafting, glasswork, and udon noodle-making. Evenings were spent around a barbeque and enjoying fireworks, which served to deepen the connections among fellow seminar members.
Blessed with sunny weather and clear skies throughout the three days, the retreat was a resounding success both academically and personally—a lively and fulfilling experience that embodied the spirit of the Fukuoka Seminar.
Postscript: A typical retreat evening
As the students rambled on and on late into the night, Professor Fukuoka offered a gentle reminder to the seminar members,
“Hey guys, it’s about time you got some sleep!”
This was a lighthearted reminder that captured the warm atmosphere of the camp and the essence of student life at Hosei University.
