On Monday October 12, there was a GSAS session on statements of purpose and recommendation letters. Professor Suan explored the general timeline for application and when to begin writing your essay and requesting letters. Specifics on how to craft a good statement of purpose, the need to tailor it to your specific application, and some strategies to avoid common mistakes were all addressed. Afterwards, students asked the etiquette for requesting recommendation letters, what to supply when asking for them, and how to best approach professors.

10月12日に志望理由書（Statement of purpose）と推薦状に関するGSASワークショップを行いました。スアン教授より、大学院出願の全体的なスケジュールや、志望理由書の執筆や推薦状の依頼をいつ頃から始めるべきかについて説明がありました。また、説得力のある志望理由書を書くためのポイント、出願先に合わせて内容を工夫することの重要性、そしてよく見られる「悪い例」の紹介と、それを避けるための具体的な方法についても詳しく紹介されました。後半では、推薦状を依頼する際のマナーや、依頼時に準備しておくべき資料、教授への依頼の仕方などについて、学生から多くの質問が寄せられました。
