S.J.さん（2025年度OAS参加）

私がOASでのSan José State University（SJSU）への留学を決めた理由は二つある。一つはイノベーション、ビジネス、マーケティングにおいて圧倒的に最先端を走るシリコンバレーという地で勉強してみたかったこと。もう一つは、OASでは2年時に留学を完了することができるので、自分にとってGISに入った理由でもある、3年次以降のゼミ学習の妨げにならないからだ。

実際に、2年次に留学を完了させたことで、３年次以降の、より学術的な授業に臨むうえで不足していると感じていた文化的理解、英語力、そしてビジネスへの知見の面で大きく成長することができたため、ゼミが始まった今、非常に良いスタ－トダッシュを切れていると感じる。

SJSUでの生活は、実にカリフォルニアらしい経験だったといえる。気候が温暖で、様々な人種や文化が同じキャンパスに共存しているため過ごしやすかった。しかし同時に、治安や公共交通機関の便の悪さも目立った。良い面も悪い面も含めて、自国との違いを強く感じることができた経験であったと思う。

There are two reasons why I chose SJSU and OAS for studying abroad. First, I wanted to study in Silicon Valley which is the frontier of innovation, business, and marketing. Second, in OAS, I can finish my study abroad before starting my third year of university. Since the reason why I enrolled in GIS is to learn at the seminar beginning Junior year, this was a big deal for me.

In fact, the experiences and knowledge I gained in SJSU made me a lot more suitable for the lessons in seminar which requires cultural understanding, academic level English proficiency, and certain level of insight into business.

Life in SJSU felt like a typical California experience for me. Warm weather and a diversity of people and cultures made daily life inspiring and comfortable. At the same time, the negative sides such as lower public security and less public transportation compared to Japan made daily life a little inconvenient. Considering both good and bad elements, my life in SJSU was an inspiring and valuable time for me.
