Graduates, congratulations on your graduation.
I would also like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to your families and to all those who have supported you along the way.
Today is a day of celebration, but it is also a day of reflection.
As I stand before you now, I do not think only of the degrees you have earned.
I think of the effort, the perseverance, and the quiet struggles that brought you to this moment.
Over the past four years, each of you has faced your own challenges.
You studied in English, wrote papers, gave presentations, and learned to express your ideas in an academic environment that was not always easy.
There were times when you felt uncertain, times when things did not go as planned, and times when you may have doubted yourselves.
And yet, you continued.
You kept going.
That is why you are here today.
For that, you should be proud of yourselves.
During your time in this faculty, you gained knowledge, developed critical thinking, encountered different values, and learned how to work with others.
But what you gained here is more than academic achievement.
You also developed resilience, maturity, and the ability to face complexity without turning away from it.
These qualities will matter greatly in the years ahead.
Today, there is one thing I especially want you to remember:
A liberal arts education is not simply an education that makes you knowledgeable.
It is an education that helps you make better decisions—in society, in organizations, and in your own life.
As you move forward, you will enter a world that is not simple.
You will encounter unfairness.
There will be times when your efforts are not rewarded immediately.
There will be situations in which no one can tell you with certainty what the right answer is.
It is in such moments that the true value of education appears.
Why is liberal arts education so important?
Because it improves the quality of your judgment.
To live and lead well, narrow expertise alone is not enough.
You need the ability to understand society, history, culture, institutions, human nature, and differences in values.
You need the ability to see the larger picture and to think from more than one perspective.
That is why I believe liberal arts education is, in a very real sense, an education for leadership.
But this is not only about leadership in organizations.
It is also about your own life.
What kind of work will you choose?
What kind of life will you build?
What will you hold on to?
What will you let go of?
What will you dare to pursue?
There are no model answers to these questions.
That is why education and culture matter so deeply.
They are not only tools for understanding society.
They are also the foundation for living your own life with wisdom.
There is one more thing I want to say clearly today.
Do not become people who speak only of ideals.
Peace matters.
Diversity matters.
Fairness matters.
These things do matter.
But the real question is always this:
How do we make those ideals real in the world as it actually is?
Ideals alone do not change society.
Good intentions alone do not transform reality.
What matters is the ability to see reality clearly and still move forward with courage, responsibility, and practical action.
That, to me, is intellectual maturity.
And that is also leadership.
So I hope you will become people who do not simply say, “Someone should do something.”
I hope you will become people who are willing to take a step forward themselves.
It does not have to be a dramatic step.
Even a small step matters, if it is real and responsible.
And when you feel uncertain in the future, I hope you will remember this day.
I hope you will remember that you have already overcome more than you once thought possible.
You have already grown more than you may realize.
Please do not underestimate the strength you have developed during your time here.
Peter Drucker once said,
“The best way to predict the future is to create it.”
The future is not something you simply wait for.
It is shaped by those who think for themselves, choose for themselves, take responsibility, and act.
Graduates, carry that spirit with you.
Hold on to your ideals, but keep your feet on the ground.
Think broadly, but act in the real world.
Use what you have learned here not only for your own success, but also to bring positive influence to others and to society.
Wherever life may take you from here, I hope you will go forward with wisdom, courage, and confidence.
And I hope you will always remember that this faculty will remain proud of you.

卒業生の皆さん、ご卒業おめでとうございます。
また、これまで皆さんを支え、励まし、見守ってこられたご家族をはじめ、関係するすべての皆さまにも、心よりお祝い申し上げます。
今日は祝福の日であると同時に、これまでを振り返る日でもあります。
今こうして皆さんを前にして、私が思うのは、皆さんが学位を得たという事実だけではありません。
その学位にたどり着くまでに重ねてきた努力、粘り強さ、そして人知れず抱えてきた葛藤や苦労のことです。
この4年間、皆さんはそれぞれに自分なりの課題と向き合ってきたはずです。
英語で学び、レポートを書き、プレゼンテーションを行い、ときに容易ではない学術的な環境の中で、自分の考えを言葉にする力を磨いてきました。
先が見えず不安を感じたこともあったでしょう。
思うようにいかなかったこともあったでしょう。
自分自身に自信を失いかけたこともあったかもしれません。
それでも皆さんは、歩みを止めなかった。
前に進み続けた。
だからこそ、今日この日を迎えることができたのです。
そのことを、どうか誇りに思ってください。
皆さんはこの学部で学ぶ中で、知識を身につけ、批判的思考力を養い、多様な価値観に触れ、他者と協働する力を身につけてきました。
しかし、皆さんがここで得たものは、単なる学業上の成果にとどまりません。
困難に向き合うしなやかさ、物事を受け止める成熟さ、そして複雑な現実から目をそらさずに向き合う力もまた、皆さんは育んできました。
こうした力は、これからの人生において大きな意味を持つはずです。
今日、皆さんにぜひ心に留めておいてほしいことが一つあります。
リベラルアーツ教育とは、単に知識を増やすための教育ではないということです。
リベラルアーツ教育は、社会の中で、組織の中で、そして自分自身の人生において、より良い判断ができるようになるための教育です。
これから皆さんが進んでいく社会は、決して単純なものではありません。
不条理に出会うこともあるでしょう。
努力がすぐには報われないこともあるでしょう。
何が正しい答えなのか、誰にもはっきりとは分からない状況に直面することもあるはずです。
教育の本当の価値が現れるのは、まさにそうしたときです。
なぜリベラルアーツ教育が重要なのか。
それは、判断の質を高めるからです。
よりよく生き、よりよく人を導くためには、狭い専門性だけでは十分ではありません。
社会、歴史、文化、制度、人間の本質、そして価値観の違いを理解する力が必要です。
物事を大きな視野で捉え、一つの角度だけでなく、複数の視点から考える力が必要です。
だからこそ私は、リベラルアーツ教育は、本質的な意味でリーダーシップのための教育でもあると考えています。
しかし、これは組織におけるリーダーシップの話だけではありません。
皆さん自身の人生の話でもあります。
どのような仕事を選ぶのか。
どのような人生を築いていくのか。
何を大切に守っていくのか。
何を手放していくのか。
何に挑戦するのか。
こうした問いに、模範解答はありません。
だからこそ、教育や教養が深い意味を持つのです。
それらは社会を理解するための道具であるだけでなく、自分自身の人生をより深く理解し、より賢明に生きるための土台でもあります。
そして、今日、もう一つ皆さんに明確に伝えたいことがあります。
どうか、理想だけを語る人にはならないでください。
平和は大切です。
多様性も大切です。
公正さも大切です。
それらは、確かに大切です。
しかし、本当に問われるべきことは、いつも同じです。
現実の世界の中で、それらの理想をどのように実現していくのか。
理想だけでは社会は変わりません。
善意だけでは現実は動きません。
大切なのは、現実を正確に見つめ、それでもなお、勇気と責任、そして実践をもって前に進む力です。
私にとって、それが知的成熟というものです。
そしてそれこそが、リーダーシップでもあります。
ですから私は、皆さんに、「誰かが何とかすべきだ」と言うだけの人にはなってほしくありません。
自ら一歩を踏み出せる人になってほしいと思います。
それは大きな一歩である必要はありません。
小さな一歩でもよいのです。
それが現実に根ざし、責任あるものであるならば、その一歩には十分な意味があります。
そして、これから先、もし皆さんが迷いや不安を感じることがあったら、今日という日を思い出してください。
かつて自分には無理だと思っていたことを、皆さんはすでに乗り越えてきたということを思い出してください。
自分で思っている以上に、皆さんはすでに成長しています。
この学部で過ごした時間の中で培った自分の力を、どうか過小評価しないでください。
ピーター・ドラッカーは、こう言いました。
「未来を予測する最良の方法は、それを創ることである。」
未来とは、ただ待っていれば与えられるものではありません。
自分で考え、自分で選び、責任を引き受け、行動する人によって形づくられていくものです。
卒業生の皆さん、どうかその精神を胸に、これからの道を歩んでください。
理想を持ちながらも、地に足をつけて行動してください。
広い視野を持ちながらも、現実の世界で行動してください。
ここで学んだことを、自分自身の成功のためだけでなく、周囲の人々や社会によい影響をもたらすためにも生かしてほしいと思います。
これから人生が皆さんをどこへ導くとしても、どうか知恵と勇気と自信を持って歩んでいってください。
そして、この学部がいつまでも皆さんを誇りに思っていることを、どうか忘れないでください。
