The 3rd GSAS workshop of the spring semester was themed around masters programs in the UK. Based on his experiences of gaining a BA, MSc and PhD in the UK, Professor Melvin provided an introduction that helped to familiarise participants with some of the key features of the UK higher education system and factors to consider when choosing a particular program, university and city. In the second part of the workshop, attendees heard from a recent GIS graduate, Akari Kanakubo, who shared her own experiences of graduate study, which began in her 2nd year at GIS and culminated in being offered an unconditional place on a prestigious MSc program at the University of Edinburgh, beginning in September. This was filled with very useful information relating to all aspects of graduate study: reflecting on your interests and motivations for choosing a particular program, points to consider when researching different programs and also applying for grants and scholarships. Akari had kindly prepared a discussion-based task, which helped participants explore what kinds of topics and issues motivate them and how this can guide their choice of program. We finished with a broad Q&A. We look forward to welcoming you to our future events in the fall semester, including an in-depth look at the higher education systems in the US, the UK and Australia.

7月1日に開催された第三回GSASワークショップでは、人気の進学先であるイギリスの大学院についてお話しました。前半はイギリスで学士(BA)、修士（MSc)、博士号（PhD）を取られたMelvin教授に、イギリスの高等教育の特徴や、イギリスプログラムを選択する際に検討すべき事項（地域や大学の特性など）について紹介いただきました。後半は、9月からイギリスの大学院（University of Edinburgh）に進学するGIS卒業生の金久保朱里さんに、合格までの道のりについて詳しく聞くことができました。自分の興味関心がどこにあり、それをどう大学院の選択に結びつけたのか、様々なプログラムや奨学金をどのように調べ、何を指針に選択したのかなど、多くの役立つ情報を共有してくれました。自分の興味分野について考えを深めるためのワークを企画してくれたので、参加した学生たちはディスカッションを通して具体的な一歩を踏み出せたようです。最後にはQ＆Aの時間もたっぷり取ることができました。秋学期には、アメリカ、オーストラリアなど他の国について学ぶワークショップを開催する予定です。
