■ 概要 ：Yokai are taking over the Pacific. From Kohara Takeshi’s more than twenty books on Okinawan monsters, to the Ryukyu Trauma Night podcasts and performances, to the monster mascots of Murasaki Mura theme park, the number of monsters in Okinawa has exploded over the past ten years. For Okinawa, majimun – the uchinaaguchi equivalent of yokai – may be read as expressions of a native Okinawan culture distinct from Japan but also tied to nativist minzokugaku discourse in the works of Yanagita Kunio and Iha Fuyu. This talk discusses how the Okinawa yokai boom challenges the perception of yokai as culturally, ethnically, and linguistically monolithic and addresses how Okinawan monsters embody regional differences within the Japanese archipelago and broader Pacific region.
