Dear new students,
Congratulations on your admission, and welcome to GIS. Today, as you step through the gates into a new world of academic inquiry, it is my great honor to warmly welcome each and every one of you to our community. You may be experiencing excitement and anticipation, accompanied perhaps by some natural apprehensions. These feelings are entirely normal and indeed valuable, as they will open doors to your hidden potential throughout your university life.
Established in 2008, GIS is a distinguished and selective faculty with approximately 100 students per year. It is important to emphasize that GIS is neither merely an "English-language course" within a larger faculty nor a "program" composed of classes from various faculties conducted in English. We are, in every sense, a fully independent faculty. Although our numbers are relatively small, our alumni have already distinguished themselves globally, excelling in prestigious graduate schools abroad and positions within global corporations. Today, you officially become members of this proud and vibrant community. I urge you to embrace this identity and to strive for a fulfilling university experience.
Each of you has joined GIS via diverse admission pathways. Regardless of how you arrived here, every single one of you stands equal from this moment forward. Whether GIS was your first choice or a destination you arrived at through circumstance, you are now, unequivocally, our valued students. And now, I encourage each of you to demonstrate that your decision to join GIS was indeed the right one through your own actions from this day forward.
Allow me to highlight two fundamental differences between high school and university education.
First, high school education aims primarily to equip students with foundational knowledge essential for life. In contrast, a university is a place of rigorous intellectual exploration and research, building upon that foundation. University “lectures” are distinct from high school “classes”. In high school, education is primarily teacher-centered; teachers impart knowledge, and students absorb it. However, university lectures invite you to actively engage with the knowledge and research presented by professors, challenging you to pursue your own intellectual inquiries. This process of active exploration and critical thinking is at the heart of higher education.
Our experienced professors at GIS are ready and eager to support your intellectual growth. When you pose one question, we will respond with abundant knowledge and insight. Yet, nothing will begin without your questions. I encourage you always to approach your studies proactively and immerse yourselves passionately in the world of learning.
As the Greek philosopher Plutarch famously stated, "The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be kindled." It is you who must kindle your own flames of intellectual curiosity, making your education at GIS truly meaningful.
Second, we professors are here to support your independent academic growth. We are neither mere dispensers of knowledge nor service providers, and you are not passive recipients or customers. Our relationship is founded upon mutual respect, collaboration, and the shared pursuit of knowledge. As professors, we aspire to inspire you intellectually and spiritually, guiding you to higher levels of thought and understanding.
Let me clarify the core identity and purpose of GIS. Our goal is to nurture globally competent individuals capable of assuming leadership roles in society. To achieve this, we offer a liberal arts education conducted in English within a close-knit community. While English is a crucial medium of communication, it is merely the tool, not the ultimate goal. The true objectives we wish you to attain during your time at GIS are authentic "liberal arts education"（教養）and "globally recognized expertise."
What exactly do we mean by "liberal arts education"? It goes beyond merely accumulating knowledge. True liberal arts education empowers you to think independently, free from preconceived notions and fixed ideas, fostering the capacity to pose meaningful questions and conduct thoughtful, critical analyses. A truly educated individual shows deep curiosity, listens humbly to diverse perspectives, enriches their own life, and contributes positively to society. I earnestly hope each of you cultivates genuine liberal arts education—not merely obeying existing frameworks but constantly questioning and innovatively reshaping them.
And what is "globally recognized expertise"? It is knowledge and skills that transcend a single organization, nation, or culture, valuable and applicable on a global scale. Throughout your four years at GIS, you will encounter a vast range of disciplines, from classical scholarship to cutting-edge research, all of which will shape your specialized expertise. Ultimately, what certifies your scholarly expertise is not the name of your undergraduate institution, but an advanced academic degree, specifically a master's degree or higher. Indeed, in today's international community, a bachelor's degree alone seldom represents one's final academic qualification. Therefore, I strongly encourage you to actively consider pursuing graduate studies at some point in your lives. Remember, maintaining a high GPA is essential for admission to distinguished graduate programs, so please commit yourselves diligently to your daily studies.
Lastly, let me clearly reiterate that a university is not merely a preparation center for employment. However, GIS offers comprehensive support for your career development. Those aspiring to pursue graduate studies overseas can benefit from GSAS, while students aiming for global careers should participate in GGLI. Additionally, our faculty organizes its own career forums. Please take full advantage of these resources to proactively shape your future.
In conclusion, I once again extend my heartfelt congratulations on your admission. It is my sincere hope that your next four years at GIS will be intellectually stimulating and personally enriching. Welcome to GIS—we are delighted to have you here.

新入生の皆さん、ご入学おめでとうございます。GISへようこそ。皆さんが本日、GISという新たな学問の扉を開いたことを心から歓迎します。おそらく、期待と胸の高鳴りを感じながらも、少なからず不安を抱いている方もいらっしゃるでしょう。そのすべてが、これからの大学生活における大切な糧となり、皆さん自身の未知の可能性を拓く鍵となります。
GISは、2008年に創設され、約100名の学生を擁する少数精鋭の学部です。GISは、学部の中にある「英語コース」ではなく、また、既存の複数の学部において英語で行われている講義を横断的に履修するような「プログラム」でもありません。私たちは「学部」です。学部としてその規模は決して大きくありませんが、多くの卒業生たちは既に海外の大学院、グローバル企業、外資系企業など多方面で活躍し、社会に確かな足跡を残しています。皆さんは本日より、その伝統を継承し、新たな歴史を築いていくGISコミュニティの一員となります。このことを誇りに感じ、充実した学生生活を送ってください。
GISへの入学経路は多岐にわたります。しかし、入学経路に優劣はありません。第一志望として入学した人も、他の道を目指して結果的にここに辿り着いた人も、今この瞬間から、皆さんは平等にGISの学生です。そして、GISに入学したというあなたの選択が正しかったことを、これからの自分自身の行動で証明してください。
本日は、大学と高校の違いについて、二つお伝えしたいと思います。
第一に、高校の教育は生きるために最低限必要な基礎学力を養うことを目的としていますが、大学はそれを基盤に、より高度で幅広い学問的探究を深める「研究」の場です。大学で行われる「講義」は、高校の「授業」の延長ではありません。「授業」が教師主体の教えるものであるのに対し、大学の「講義」は教授が示す知識や研究成果を、皆さん自身が主体的に探求し、自らのものにしていくプロセスです。これこそが大学教育の真髄です。GISには経験豊かな教授陣が揃っています。皆さんが一つの問いを投げかければ、私たちはそれに応じて何倍もの知識と示唆を返します。しかし、問いかけがなければ何も始まりません。常に主体的に問いを立て、積極的に学問の世界に飛び込んでください。
古代ギリシャの哲学者プルタルコスは「精神は満たされるべき器ではなく、燃やされるべき「炎」である」と述べました。皆さん自身が主体的に知の炎を燃え上がらせることで、GISでの学びが真に輝きを増すということです。
第二に、私たち教授陣は皆さんの主体的な学問的成長を支える存在であり、単なる知識の提供者ではなく、ましてやサービス提供者ではありません。皆さんも受動的にそれらを受け取るお客様ではありません。私たちと皆さんは、教授と学生として、共に学問に向き合う関係です。そして、私たちは、皆さんにとって、精神性や知性において、皆さんに高みを示す存在でありたいと考えています。
ここで、GISについて確認しましょう。GISの目的は、グローバルリーダーとして社会で活躍できる人材を育成することです。そのために、英語によるリベラルアーツ教育を少人数制で行っています。ただし、英語はあくまでコミュニケーションの手段であり、卒業時点での高い英語力の獲得は、GISでの学びの結果にすぎません。GISが皆さんに身に付けて欲しいのは、グローバルリーダーとして必要不可欠である、真の「教養」と「グローバルに通用する専門性」です。
では、「教養」とは何でしょうか。それは、単なる知識の集積を超え、先入観や固定観念に囚われず、自ら問いを立てて主体的に考察する力によって獲得したもの」です。真の教養を備えた人は、多様な物事に広く関心を持ち、周囲の意見にも謙虚に耳を傾け、自らの人生を豊かにし、より良い社会をつくることができます。ぜひ皆さんには真の「教養」を身につけ、既存の枠組みに疑問を持たずに「従う」存在ではなく、常に批判的な思考を持って新たな価値やルールを「創造する」人間になっていただきたいと思います。
また、「グローバルに通用する専門性」とは何でしょうか。それは一つの組織や国・地域を超えたグローバルに通用する知識やスキルを指します。GISの4年間で学ぶ様々な分野における古典から最先端の研究にいたるすべてが、皆さんの専門性を形作ることでしょう。そして、その学術的な専門性を証明するのは何でしょうか。修士号以上の学位です。学士の大学名ではありません。実際、国際社会において学士号は最終学歴ではありません。ぜひ将来を見据えて人生のどこかのタイミングで大学院進学を視野に入れて行動して欲しいと思います。なお、大学院進学時には、高いGPAが必要ですので、日々の学業において高いGPAの獲得と維持を目指して頑張ってください。
最後に、大学は就職予備校ではないことをあらためて伝えておきます。しかし、GISでは皆さんのキャリア形成を全面的に支援しています。先に述べたように海外大学院を目指す方にはGSASが用意されています。また、グローバル企業への就職を目指す方にはGGLIに参加すると良いでしょう。学部独自のキャリアフォーラムも開催しています。ぜひこれらを積極的に活用し、自分自身の将来への道筋を主体的に描いてください。
最後になりますが、皆さんのご入学を改めて心より祝福いたします。GISでの4年間が皆さんにとって学問的にも人間的にも実り多き日々となることを、心から願っています。ようこそGISへ。
