Thank you very much for applying to the 2026 GIS Comprehensive Selection. This year, we received a significantly larger number of applications than last year—from across Japan and beyond. I am truly grateful that GIS has gained such strong recognition both domestically and internationally, and I feel a renewed responsibility to meet the expectations that so many of you place in our program.
I would like to begin by emphasizing that admission through the GIS Comprehensive Selection is never determined by a single factor. We review each application holistically, considering a wide range of elements including your school records, academic performance across multiple subject areas, English proficiency, personal statement, and letters of recommendation. Contrary to common assumptions, admission is not based on meeting a specific score threshold in grades or English tests.
I would also like to comment on the personal statements you submitted.
Your descriptions of leadership experiences were particularly strong. Through your accounts of club activities, school and community projects, and other initiatives, we could clearly see how you took initiative and demonstrated leadership in meaningful ways.
On the other hand, many applicants could develop their explanation of inquiry-based learning further. Inquiry does not refer simply to studying abroad, volunteering, or participating in Model United Nations. Rather, it is the process of identifying a question born from your own curiosity, investigating it independently, analyzing what you learn, and arriving at fresh insights. Universities are places where students deepen their academic interests and conduct research, and we look closely at whether applicants show the foundations needed to eventually undertake a graduation thesis or research project.
To Those Who Have Been Accepted
Congratulations on your admission. This year’s selection process was even more competitive than last year, and your achievements stood out in our holistic review.
At GIS, you will engage in a rigorous liberal arts education delivered entirely in English and in small, discussion-based classes. Our goal is to cultivate global leaders who can address complex challenges around the world. I look forward to welcoming you in April and beginning this new academic journey together. Let us work to shape a better future alongside one another.
To Those Who Were Not Accepted
I am truly sorry that we were not able to meet your expectations. As I mentioned earlier, we received applications from an exceptionally talented group of students this year, including all of you. These results reflect relative evaluation among applicants and do not diminish your abilities, efforts, or potential in any way.
I sincerely hope you continue to pursue your goals with confidence and that you will achieve great success in the path you choose.
Please note that additional admissions may be announced on December 23rd, depending on circumstances. Be sure to check the official updates.
Once again, thank you for applying to the GIS Comprehensive Selection. I am deeply grateful for the time, effort, and thought each of you put into your application. I wish you all a bright and promising future.

About GIS
Established in 2008, GIS is one of the very few independent faculties in Japan that offers an entire degree program taught in English. Unlike English-medium “courses” or “tracks” commonly found at other universities, GIS operates as a standalone faculty dedicated to nurturing global leaders who can approach complex, cross-disciplinary issues from multiple perspectives.
Our curriculum includes more than 200 English-taught courses across approximately 30 fields in the humanities and social sciences, as well as university-wide data science courses.
We emphasize small-group instruction, where students from diverse backgrounds engage deeply with peers and faculty in English and develop strong academic and intercultural competencies.
GIS graduates pursue a wide range of paths—including careers in Japanese and international companies, graduate study overseas, and entrepreneurship—supported by robust career development programs such as GGLI and GSAS.
