Dear Graduates and Guests,
It is a great honor to stand before you today as the Dean of GIS. First and foremost, I wish to congratulate you on reaching this milestone.
You have all walked a unique path over the past four years. Some of you may look back on your time at GIS as an exciting journey filled with unforgettable moments—intellectual challenges, deep friendships, passionate debates, and perhaps even love. Others may remember the struggle of balancing rigorous coursework, countless presentations, and demanding discussions. Regardless of your individual experiences, one thing is certain: you have persevered, and today, you stand here as graduates.
GIS is unlike any other faculty. Our curriculum is entirely in English, class sizes are small, discussions are intense, and expectations are high. Attendance is strictly enforced, and all of you needed to develop the confidence to articulate your thoughts in front of a diverse audience of students and faculty from around the world. You have thrived in this dynamic environment, and for that, I commend you.
But today is not just about celebrating the past—it is about looking toward the future. What matters now is how you apply what you have learned. The real test begins today.
In the United States, those who pursue higher education often continue to master’s or doctoral programs, while those who choose not to attend university acquire specialized skills through professional institutions. What can we learn from this? The answer is clear: having expertise that is globally relevant is key. Whatever path you choose, remember that your success will depend on the depth and applicability of your knowledge.
Another crucial factor in your future will be artificial intelligence. AI is evolving rapidly, and the day when AI surpasses human intelligence may not be far away. The ability to use AI effectively and efficiently will be a valuable asset. However, do not forget that we are human beings—thinking, social creatures who exist through interaction with others. If we lose our ability to think critically and engage meaningfully with people, we will lose our true value as human beings.
We also live in a time of global uncertainty. Political tensions, economic instability, and environmental challenges demand action. You may feel that your role in these global issues is small, but even the smallest actions matter. Ask yourself: What can I do right now to contribute to a better world? To answer this question, you must constantly adopt two perspectives—to observe the world objectively from a distance (to see the bigger picture) and to look up at those who have led before you for inspiration. Moving between these two viewpoints—overview and aspiration—will be essential in shaping your role in society. At GIS, we have provided you with a liberal arts education to prepare you to be leaders, and now it is up to you all to take on responsibilities and work toward building a better society.
It is good to have ideals, but ideals alone are not enough. Reality will always present challenges and contradictions. You must bridge the gap between what should be done and what can be done. Do not simply say, “Things should be this way.” Instead, think critically, find practical solutions, and take action. Above all, never stop questioning what it means to be human.
As you step into the next stage of your life, remember: success is not measured by the title you hold, but by the impact you make. Be ambitious, be thoughtful, and never stop learning.
Congratulations, GIS graduates! The world is yours to shape.

卒業生の皆さん、そしてご来賓の皆様へ
本日、GIS学部長として皆さんの前に立ち、この素晴らしい節目を祝えることを大変光栄に思います。まずは、卒業おめでとうございます。
この4年間、皆さんはGISならではの独自の環境で学んできました。振り返ってみて、楽しいこともあったでしょう。時には苦しいと感じることもあったかもしれません。新しい挑戦にワクワクし、仲間と語り合い、議論を重ね、恋をした人もいるでしょう。あるいは、膨大な課題に追われ、無数のプレゼンに立ち向かった日々を思い出す人もいるかもしれません。どんな経験であれ、皆さんはこの厳しい環境を乗り越え、今日ここに立っています。その努力を心から称えたいと思います。
GISは、他の学部とは大きく異なります。授業はすべて英語、小規模で密度の濃いディスカッションがあり、出席は厳しく管理され、プレゼンテーションの機会も多い。そして、教員も学生も多様なバックグラウンドを持つ、まさに国際的な学びの場です。このような環境の中で、皆さんは粘り強く学び続けました。その努力に敬意を表します。しかし、本当に大切なのは、GISで学んだことをどう活かすかです。これからが、皆さんにとっての本当の試練の始まりです。
アメリカでは、学士課程を修了した人の多くが、修士や博士課程へ進学します。一方で、大学に進学しなかった人は、専門の機関でスキルを学び、社会で活躍する道を選びます。このことから分かるのは、「グローバルに通用する専門性」の重要性です。皆さんも、これからどの道を選ぶにせよ、専門性を高め、世界で活躍できる人材となることを意識してください。
また、AIの進化はこれからさらに加速し、シンギュラリティ（AIが人間の知能を超える臨界点）を迎える日も遠くないかもしれません。これからの社会では、AIをいかに効果的かつ効率的に活用できるかが重要になります。しかし、それだけでは十分ではありません。人間は考える生き物であり、他者と関わりながら生きる存在です。もし、私たちが思考を放棄し、人との関わりを軽視すれば、人間としての本質的な価値を失ってしまいます。
今、世界は混沌としています。国際社会は不安定で、政治・経済・環境など、さまざまな課題が山積しています。こうした状況の中で、「自分に何ができるのか」を考え、行動することが求められています。最初は小さなことでも構いません。重要なのは、「俯瞰」と「仰視」の姿勢を持つことです。つまり、一歩引いて世界を広い視野で見つめること（俯瞰）と、先人たちの知恵やリーダーシップに学びながら、自分にできることを模索すること（仰視） を行き来しながら、行動することが大切なのです。GISは、リベラルアーツ教育を通じて、皆さんにリーダーとしての素養を育んできました。これからは、皆さん一人ひとりが、より良い社会の実現に向けて力を尽くす番です。
理想を持つことは大切です。しかし、現実と理想の間には大きなギャップが常に存在します。理想を掲げるだけでは不十分であり、理想を持たないこともまた問題です。大切なのは、常に現実的な解を考え、それを実行する力を持つことです。単に「～すべきだ」と言うだけの人間にはならないでください。そして、「人間とは何か」という問いを持ち続けてください。物事の本質を深く理解し、行動することが、これからの皆さんに求められています。
卒業はゴールではなく、新たなスタートです。成功とは、肩書きやステータスではなく、どれだけ社会に貢献できたかで決まります。常に学び、考え、行動し続けてください。
GIS卒業生の皆さん、おめでとうございます！ 皆さんの未来が輝かしいものであることを心から願っています。
