A recent GIS graduate has been chosen by the University of Bath in the UK to be the recipient of their Global Leaders scholarship – an award only given to 45 exceptional postgraduate applicants this year.

The GIS faculty extends its congratulations to Kotone Tsunehisa on her marvelous achievement.

Please see below for Kotone’s description of her postgraduate application journey.

Why did you chose to study in the UK?

As graduate schools in the UK offer a master's degree that can be completed in one year, studying in this country was attractive to me.
Also, because I was studying in the British Culture and Literature Seminar, I started to have a dream to live in the UK and to be able to speak British English.

Which MA subject did you choose and why?

My starting point was the study of English, learning this language was very important to me and was my passion, and studying this language was the only subject that I have remained passionate about throughout my academic career so far. So, for my postgraduate study I become interested in TESOL, particularly as in the future I want to encourage kids in Japan to study English.

What was the graduate school application process like?

In around October of my senior year I started applying to different graduate schools in the UK.
The application process in the UK requires not only a personal statement written, but also letters of recommendation from professors, so I started contacting professors and preparing my documentation several months in advance.

I was so glad that I received an unconditional offer from the University of Bath (graduate schools in the UK give either unconditional offer (acceptance) or conditional offers (acceptance upon meeting more conditions)).

Additionally, I applied for and was accepted for a Global Leader scholarship that is offered by the University of Bath. I felt relieved to receive this as it makes the financial side of studying abroad easier.

For my applications, including both university and scholarship applications, I visited the GIS reference room several times, and a native staff member supported me in writing many types of essays. This helped me a lot.
I am so excited to study at the University of Bath from September 2023. I hope I can experience many things that are new to me during this stay.
