| Education and Experience/教育・経験 | Dr. Kukhee Choo received her B.F.A. in Painting from Ewha Womans University (Seoul, South Korea), and her B.S. in Radio-TV-Film and M.A. in Journalism from The University of Texas at Austin (U.S.A.). Under the MEXT scholarship, Dr. Choo earned her Media Sociology Ph.D. from the University of Tokyo Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies with her dissertation on the Japanese government’s Cool Japan policies. Before entering graduate school, she worked as a television producer and she incorporates this hands-on experience into her teachings. As a former painter, comic book artist, television producer, filmmaker, photographer, web designer, and a social activist, Dr. Choo believes in education that reaches beyond the classroom. She tries to guide students to become individuals who can contribute to the betterment of humanity through critical thinking and proactive social engagement. Dr. Choo has previously taught at Tulane University (U.S.A.) and Sophia University (Japan) and has appeared on international news programs as a commentator, including CNN’s “Christiane Amanpour: Sex and Love Around the World – Tokyo” on Netflix. |
| Research Interests/研究関心 | Dr. Choo’s research focuses on critical theory; race, class, and gender; film and media representations; postcolonialism, nationalism, and surveillance. As a scholar who has been trained in both visual arts and social sciences, Dr. Choo approaches film and media texts from a unique vantage point that combines both quantitative and qualitative perspectives. She has published articles in journals such as Women: A Cultural Review; Postscript; Television & New Media; Mechademia; Culture, Theory, & Critique; Asian Cinema Journal; and various book anthologies. |

韓国の梨花女子大学で西洋美術の学士号（B.F.A.）、米国のテキサス州立大学オースティン校でラジオ・テレビ・映画学の学士号（B.S.）とジャーナリズム学の修士号（M.A.）、東京大学大学院学際情報学府博士号（Ph.D.）を取得。米国のテュレーン大学（Tulane University）と上智大学で勤務。
アメリカ育ち、韓国では１０代を過ごし、アジアにおける様々な躍動の政治・文化の変遷を外側の立場から体験し、社会の機動力としての大衆メディアに関心を持つようになる。テレビ放送局でプロデューサーとして務めた経験を活かし、大学院ではジャーナリズム学とメディア社会学を専門。主に映画、テレビ、マンガとアニメなどのメディアにおける人種・民族・ジェンダーの表象、文化政策とグローバリゼーション、生政治、ポストコロニアリズム、ナショナリズムなどに焦点を与えた研究を行う。国連で活躍できる日本の女性人材を育成する夢を叶えるため、アメリカの大学永久職を辞めて来日することを決める。批判的思考と積極的な社会参加を通して、学生たちが人類の向上に貢献できる人材になるよう指導することを心がけている。国際ニュース機関であるCNNの「Christiane Amanpour: Sex and Love Around the World―Tokyo」（Netflix放送）を含めた海外の番組にもコメンテーターとして多数出演。
