2023年4月にGISに入学した学生にインタビューしました。受験時のエピソードや学習方法に加え、GISでの学びを通じて得た気づきや経験についてもお話しいただきました。また、将来の目標に向けた現在の取り組みや、受験生へのメッセージも紹介しています。

高校で英語以外に熱心に取り組んだ科目とその理由を教えてください。また、GISでの学びにつながっていますか。
高校では、「Environmental Systems and Societies（環境システムと社会）」という科目が好きで熱心に取り組んでいました。「環境」という分野は、幅広い社会問題に対し多角的な視点で考察し分析しなくてはならず、とても複雑な科目でした。しかし、毎日新しいケーススタディを勉強するのも新鮮で、GISに入った今でも、あらゆる講義でその時勉強したことを最大限活かせています！
In high school, I was passionate about a course called "Environmental Systems and Societies" and I approached it with great enthusiasm. The subject required analyzing a wide range of issues from diverse perspectives, which made it both challenging and intellectually rewarding. I especially enjoyed studying new case studies every day, as it kept the material fresh and engaging. Even now, as a GIS student, I find myself frequently drawing on the knowledge and insights I gained from that course in many of my classes.
GISへの志望理由を教えてください。
少人数精鋭のクラスでハイレベルな学びや学友、教授とのディスカッションを、全て英語で行うところに魅力を感じました。私はもともと英語で学ぶ大学、学部に行きたいと考えていましたが、他大学のオープンキャンパスや体験授業など多数訪れてみた結果、法政大学のGISが自分に一番しっくりきたなと思っています。
I was drawn to the idea of joining a small, selective class where high-level discussions and learning take place entirely in English. I had always wanted to study in a program that offered education in English, and after visiting various universities and attending open campuses and trial lessons, I found that Hosei University's GIS program felt like the perfect fit for me.
なぜ英語外部試験利用入試の受験を決めたのでしょうか。
受験期の夏、英検１級に合格でき、英検１級というアドバンテージやこれまで努力したことをストレートに評価される試験方式を探していたところ、唯一、英語外部試験利用入試を選択できるGISだけが、自分に合った試験方式だなと感じ、選びました。
I passed the Eiken Grade 1 test during the summer when I was preparing for university entrance exams. I wanted to make the most of this achievement by choosing an application process that would recognize my hard work. When I researched universities that accept English proficiency test results, I found that GIS was the only program with an admission method that truly valued my efforts and accomplishments. This made it clear to me that GIS was the right choice for my application.
どのように受験勉強を進めましたか。
当時通っていた予備校の講師からの勧めで、英語のほかに現代文に力を入れました。英語といっても結局は言語のため、現代文と共通するところが多く、特に論説・評論文の内容をただ単に解くのではなく「理解する」ことに力を入れ、国語力と知識を蓄えることに専念しました。
When applying to universities using my English qualifications, my cram school teacher emphasized that I needed to focus more on modern Japanese literature. During the entrance exam period, I prioritized not just solving but truly understanding argumentative and critical essays for modern Japanese literature. I dedicated myself to improving my language skills and expanding my knowledge, ensuring that my preparations were well-rounded.
GISの一般選抜入試に向けてどのように対策しましたか。
前述した通り、現代文がGISの英語外部試験利用入試でとても重要です。もっとも、共通テストの現代文よりも難易度は上がりますが、毎日少なくとも２つの長文は読んでいたので、読解力はつけられたと思います。また、1年を通して、漢字やことわざなども復習し、対策をしました。
As mentioned earlier, modern Japanese literature plays a crucial role in the GIS admission exam. While I think that the texts were more challenging than those in standard university entrance exams, I made it a habit to read at least two passages daily, which I believe significantly improved my Japanese reading comprehension skills. Additionally, I spent a year reviewing kanji, proverbs, and other language fundamentals to ensure I was fully prepared for the exam.
英語外部試験利用入試のメリットを教えてください。
一言で言うと、この試験方式で受験したことで本当に気持ちが楽になれました。もちろん推薦入試ではないため、他大学も多数出願し受験しましたが、GISの英語外部利用入試は条件を満たすと試験科目が1教科のみのため、その点、自分に降りかかる負担やプレッシャーは軽減され、助かりました。
In short, applying through this admission method brought me a great sense of relief. While I applied to many other universities through their general entrance exams, the GIS admission exams significantly reduced the pressure on me. Since meeting the requirements allowed me to take just one subject test, it lightened my workload and eased much of the stress I was facing during the application process.
合格の秘訣とアドバイスをお願いします。
合格して気付いたことですが、ただ単に勉強ができればいいという訳ではありません。一見、「関係ないのではないか」と思っていた科目でも、意外と共通点が多いのです。例えば、「歴史」や「地理」の学びは、異なる文化や国際関係を理解する助けになっています。つまり、高校時代に学んだことは、GISの学びにおいて「無駄」なものは一つもないばかりか、どの科目も各々の切り口で「考える力」を鍛えてくれていたのだと思います。GISは多角的な視点で物事を考える場なので、高校時代に触れた幅広い知識や経験が、今、本当に役立っています。
Looking back, now that I’ve been accepted, I’ve realized that academic success alone isn’t enough. Subjects that initially seemed unrelated turned out to have surprising connections. For instance, the topics I studied in history and geography for social studies have been invaluable in understanding different cultures and international relations. In other words, nothing I learned in high school has ever been “wasted” when it came to my studies at GIS. Each subject has helped me to develop critical thinking skills from different perspectives. Since GIS emphasizes analyzing topics from multiple angles, the broad range of knowledge I gained in high school has proven to be incredibly useful.

GISに入学してよかったことはありますか。
少数精鋭クラスで、講義での様々なテーマに対して濃厚なディスカッションを日常的にできることが本当に良かったです。自ら進んで、問題解決をできる空間を生み出していけていると思います。まあ、強いて不満があると言えば、電子レンジが食堂にないことだけです。（笑）
Being part of a small, selective class where in-depth discussions about the course material are a daily norm has been truly rewarding. I feel like GIS fosters an environment where students are encouraged to take the initiative and actively solve problems.
