2023年4月にGISに入学した学生にインタビューしました。受験時のエピソードや学習方法に加え、GISでの学びを通じて得た気づきや経験についてもお話しいただきました。また、将来の目標に向けた現在の取り組みや、受験生へのメッセージも紹介しています。

高校で英語以外に熱心に取り組んだ科目とその理由を教えてください。また、GISでの学びにつながっていますか。
高校では、英語以外に社会科目の勉強を頑張りました。私は世界史を選択していましたが、暗記科目が苦手だったため、特に時間をかけて勉強していました。当時は受験科目として勉強していましたが、大学入学後、受験生時代に身についた知識が授業の様々な場面で役に立ちました。特にディスカッションを行う場面では、受験の際に身につけた知識をもとに自分の意見を発表することで、説得力のある主張がしやすくなりました。
I focused not only on English but also on social studies at high school. One of the subjects I chose was world history, but I had to spend a lot of time studying it since I wasn’t good at memorizing facts. At first, I felt like I was studying only for my exams, but the knowledge I got at that time became useful in various classes at university. In particular, it has been easier to make persuasive arguments by using the knowledge I gained at high school.
GISへの志望理由を教えてください。
幼い頃から英語が好きで、英語を使用する仕事に就きたいと考えていましたが、明確に職業は決まっていませんでした。そのため、分野を問わず、幅広い科目を英語で学べるGISに行きたいと思いました。特に留学経験はなかったため、英語力に自信はありませんでしたが、英語に囲まれた環境で過ごすことが英語力を伸ばすために一番良いと思い、志望を決めました。
I was obsessed with English since I was a child and wanted to have a job using English, but I wasn’t sure what kind of job that would be. So, I decided to go to GIS where I could study a wide range of subjects in English regardless of the field. I had no particular experience studying abroad, so I was not confident about my English ability. However, I thought that immersing myself in an all-English environment would be the best way to improve my English skills.
A方式入試に向けてどのように勉強を行いましたか。
私が受験したA方式は、英語の独自試験の代わりに、出願時に英検のスコアを提出することが必須でした。私は英語のリーディングが苦手だったため、長文を読んだり、単語をたくさん覚えたりして、受験直前で必要なスコアを取得しました。独自試験の国語と世界史に関しては、全体的な基礎を固めたかったため、共通テスト対策用の問題で勉強をしていました。しかしながら、早い段階で法政大学の過去問に触れ、問題の傾向を掴んだ方が良かったのかなとも思います。
Under the A system I had to submit my Eiken score when I applied rather than take an English exam. I was not good at reading, so I tried to get used to reading long passages and to memorize a lot of vocabulary so I could get the required score. I also wanted to improve my fundamental knowledge, so I studied Japanese and world history for university entry group exams. However, I think I should have looked at more past GIS exams to get a better understanding of the requirements.
合格の秘訣とアドバイスはありますか。
入試科目であった国語と世界史に関しては、ひっかけ問題よりは基礎的な問題が多かった印象があります。ただし、特に注意を払いながら問題に取り組まないと、正解にたどりつけません。なお、国語については、長文の筆記問題が多い印象があるため、共通テストとは別で対策している人も多いと思いますが、GISの場合は、共通テストと出題傾向が似ているので、同様の勉強方法でも良いと思います。
I felt that the questions in my GIS exam were rather foundational, they weren’t trick questions. Generally private university exams tend to be difficult with long reading passages that you have to answer in short essays. Some people prepare for these separately from university entry group exams. The difficulty of the exams may vary by department, but GIS has mostly multiple-choice questions and essay questions. In the Japanese exam, there were longer time limits for Modern and Classical Japanese, so you can take time to carefully think about them before answering.

英検準1級（Eiken Pre-1）
GISに入学してよかったことはありますか。
GISに入学して良かったことは、友達が作りやすいところです。他の学部とは異なり、学部の人数が少なく、ほとんどの授業でディスカッションやグループ課題があるため、サークルや部活に入らなくても自然と友達が作りやすい環境にあります。そのため、消極的な自分でも入学してすぐに友達ができました。さらに、GISの授業は学年関係なく受講できる授業も多いので、先輩後輩とも仲良くなりやすいところも魅力だと思います。
One of the best things about GIS is that it is easy to make friends. Unlike other faculties, the number of students in the department is relatively small, and most classes have discussions and group assignments, so it is easy to make friends without joining any clubs or activities. Therefore, even though I was kind of shy and bit of an introvert, I could make friends right away after entering the university. In addition, many GIS classes are open to students of all years, so it is easy to make friends with anyone regardless of age.
