2024年4月に総合型選抜 自己推薦入試 A基準で入学を果たした学生にインタビューを行いました。限られた出願書類の中で、GISへの熱意をどのように表現し、合格することができたのか。また、現在GIS学部の学生としてどのような学びや経験を積んでいるのか、語ってもらいました。受験生へのアドバイスも紹介しています。

高校において、英語以外で熱心に取り組んだ科目・教科についてその理由、またGISでの学びに繋がっていることを教えてください。
高校時代では、英語以外に社会全般の科目に力を入れていました。個人的に好きな教科であったのもありますが、多様なバックグラウンドを持つ生徒が集まるGISではグローバルな視点を持つ生徒が多いので、日本はもちろん日本以外の事象についても触れていくことが重要だと思いました。また、高校時代特に熱心に取り組んでいた社会科の授業の延長線で、現在GISのtourismの授業の関心につながっています。
In high school, I focused on subjects in social studies in addition to English. I like these kinds of subjects, but I also felt that it was important to learn about event and viewpoints from outside of Japan since many students at GIS have a global viewpoint. In addition, the subjects in social studies I was passionate about in high school led to my current interest in studying about tourism at GIS.
GISへの志望理由を教えてください。
高校2年生から3年生にかけてカナダへ留学していました。そこで、大学でも英語を使い、ディスカッションやプレゼンテーションを通してアクティブに学ぶ授業を受けたいと思い始めました。また、大学生活では一つの学問を研究するだけでなくさまざまな学問の視点から自分の興味を深めていきたいと思いました。その中で、GISのリベラルアーツ教育と少人数制を取り入れ、アクティブで幅広い学びの環境は自分の大学生活へのモチベーションと合致していたためG I Sへ進学することを決めました。
Since I studied abroad in Canada during part of my time in high school, I came to think that I want to study in English at university as well. Moreover, I wanted to gain a higher education where students learn actively through discussions and presentations. Also, I wanted to explore my interests not only from a specific area but also from various academic points of view. For these reasons I felt that GIS, which teaches liberal arts through active learning and which has a low teacher-student ratio, matched what I felt would be my ideal university.
なぜ自己推薦入試A基準への出願を決めたのでしょうか。
高校2年生から3年生にかけてカナダへ留学していたため一般入試より、英語外部試験のスコアを利用することができるA基準を受験することにしました。またA基準では、なぜ自分がこの学部で学びたいのかを直接伝えることのできる入試なので自分に合っていると思いました。
As I had been in Canada for a few months I felt unprepared for taking the general entrance examination at GIS, but I realized I could take advantage of my English proficiency certificate and apply via A Standard entry. Moreover, I think the route allowed me to more accurately present my passion for studying at GIS.
Personal Statementを作成した際、気を付けたことはありますか。
Personal statementを書く際最も気をつけたことは、自分のオリジナルに仕上げていくことです。言い換えると、自分の興味を現実的な視点から掘り下げて書くことです。そのために、毎日時事ニュースを見ることや図書館に行きたくさんの知識を仕入れることが自分の興味に深みを出すきっかけになると思います。そして、その興味になぜG I Sが必要なのかを繋げることができるとまとまったPersonal statementに仕上がると思います。
I think that when you write a personal statement, that it is essential to make it original to you. In other words, I wrote about my interests while trying to keep a practical perspective. While that might sound hard to do, I think reading current news every day and doing further reading at a library can help add depth to what you are writing about. In addition, connecting your interests with the reasons why you want to study at GIS will make your personal statement coherent.
Personal Statementの探求経験やリーダーシップ経験を書くにあたって、どんなことに注力しましたか
高校1年生の時から常に意識していたことは、たくさんのチャレンジを高校生活で経験したいと思っていたことです。高校に入学してすぐ、都立高校の留学プログラムの説明会が開催されていたため、参加しました。中学生の頃から海外で生活することに憧れを抱いていたため、今自分がチャレンジしたいことはこれだと思い、参加することに決めました。またそのプログラムは、留学前に日本にいる時からゼミナール研究や異文化理解の講座を受講することが可能だったため、さらに自分を成長させられる環境であると考えました。A基準の出願時に提出したPersonal statement では、このプログラムを通して得た探究経験と、留学先のダンスの授業でのチームパフォーマンスを通じて培ったリーダーシップを記述しました。
これらの経験から、高校生活では、たくさんのことにチャレンジをしていくことが重要だと思います。どんな小さなことでも、そこの環境で自分がどう成長できたかを客観的に追求できると、とても濃くオリジナリティ溢れるPersonal statement になると思います。
Ever since I started my first year of high school, I was always aware that I wanted to experience many challenges during my time at school. So, immediately after entering high school, I attended an explanation session about a study abroad program for metropolitan high school students. I had longed to live abroad since middle school, so I decided to challenge myself by participating in the program. I also chose to participate because I could take courses in seminar research and cross-cultural understanding at my high school before leaving Japan, which I thought would be an opportunity to develop myself further before studying abroad. When applying to GIS at Hosei University I had to write a personal statement as part of my application, and so I described the exploratory experiences I gained while studying abroad during high school and the leadership skills I developed through team performances for the dance class I had joined while abroad. Based on my own experiences, I believe that it is important to take on many challenges in high school. In addition, you can make your statement very rich and original by explaining how you have been able to grow in your particular environment, no matter how small it is.

IELTS 6.5
合格の秘訣とアドバイスをお願いします。
A基準で大切な英語スコアとPersonal statementですが、まず力を入れたのは英語スコアを伸ばすことでした。カナダから帰ってきた高校3年生の夏に初めてIELTSを受けました。そこから1ヶ月集中的に勉強して受験に提出するスコアを取りました。そして、IELTSと並行してPersonal statementに何を書くかを考え始めました。夏は英語スコアの勉強とPersonal statementをバランスよく進めていくことが大切だと思います。
When it comes to taking the A Standard route, your English score and personal statement are very important. The first step I took was to study intensively toward IELTS, and I took it for the first time in the summer of my senior year in high school with the aim of getting the required score for GIS. During the same time, in parallel with studying IELTS, I started thinking about what to write in my personal statement. I would say that in the summer before making an application to GIS that it is important to keep a good balance between improving your English score and writing your personal statement.
GISに入学してよかったことを教えてください。
GISに入学して最も良かったと思う点は、志望のきっかけとなった1クラス最大36人の少人数制度です。少人数制によって教授との距離が近く、授業についての質問に対して細かく一人ひとりの生徒にあったアドバイスをいただくことができます。また、クラスメイト同士のコミュニケーションの機会も増え、お互いに高め合いながら授業に参加することができます。
What I like about GIS the most is the small class sizes, with a maximum of 36 students per class. The low teacher-student ratio allows students to be close to their professors and to receive detailed and individualized advice when we ask questions. In addition, smaller classes mean that students can more easily talk with not only the professors, but also with each other.

受験勉強は思い通りに進むことができない時もあると思いますが、自分の理想の大学生活を送っていること想像し、1日1日を大切に、そして健康に気をつけてこれからも頑張ってください！皆さんGISでお会いできること楽しみにしています！
