From September17 (Tue) to September 19 (Thu), 2024, the Fukuoka Seminar held a summer training camp in Hakuba, Nagano Prefecture. The primary goals of this camp were for students to present their progress on their graduation theses and to strengthen friendships within the group. The graduation thesis progress presentations kicked off as soon as everyone had arrived, starting with the fourth-year students. After each presentation, there was a lively exchange of sharp feedback from Dr. Fukuoka and numerous questions and comments from other students. This led to some very insightful discussions with various students giving great input. The fourth-year students will use this valuable feedback while working toward completing their thesis drafts by the end of December. Both Dr. Fukuoka and the other members of the seminar hope that these students will keep pushing forward until the very end! Next, the third-year students gave their presentations. They shared their current interests and ideas for their upcoming graduation thesis topics, which they will begin in earnest next year. Each student presented a unique theme, which means that next year’s seminar activities will certainly be something to look forward to. This first day went late into the night, with everyone finally calling it a day at 11:30 p.m.
The second day was dedicated to refreshment and relaxation. After enjoying a leisurely breakfast and lunch together, we engaged in team-building activities. The group was split into two teams—one for rafting and the other for ice cream making. Both groups had a fantastic time with the rafting team enjoying getting thoroughly soaked while sharing plenty of laughs, and the ice cream team working hard together to make homemade ice cream. Once it was ready, they could savor the cold fruits of their labor, which was even more enjoyable due to the hot weather. In the evening the entire group enjoyed a lively BBQ, with the day being capped off with fireworks.
On the third and final day, the group took a trip to Karuizawa for a leisurely stroll around town before the camp came to an end. The group truly embodied the Fukuoka Seminar’s motto of "Study Hard, Play Hard" over the course of this enriching two-night, three-day camp. Not only did everyone deepen their academic knowledge, but they also strengthened their friendships and bonds with each other. It was a perfect opportunity for everyone, regardless of the year they are in, to take their next step forward in their seminar journey.
