本イベントでは、アジア系アメリカ文学におけるアジア系男性象に焦点を当て、FBI捜査官であり日系作家でもある
ハワイ出身のスコット・キッカワ氏を迎える。ノアールというジャンルに惹かれた背景や、１９５０年代を舞台に選んだ理由、
ハワイ社会に潜む闇の描写、そしてＦＢＩ捜査官としての豊富な経験が作品の殺人事件描写にどのように反映されているかを
取り上げながら、これまで「弱い」「アンチヒーロー」として描かれがちであったアジア系男性象から意識的に逸脱し、
「力強く・男らしい」日系人探偵を主人公に据えたキッカワ氏の推理小説の特徴について講演いただく。

This event focuses on representations of Asian American masculinity in Asian American literature and features Scott Kikkawa,
a Hawaii-born Japanese American author and FBI agent. The talk will explore Kikkawa’s attraction to the noir genre,
his reasons for setting his novels in the 1950s, his portrayal of the darker aspects of Hawaiian society, and the ways
his extensive experience as an FBI agent informs his depiction of murder investigations. Through these discussions,
Kikkawa will reflect on how his detective fiction deliberately departs from the conventional portrayals of Asian American men
as “weak” or “anti-heroic,” instead centering a “strong, masculine” Japanese American detective as his protagonist.
