Exporting Art and Craft of Japanese Lacquer.
A Quest for Singularity, c. 1860-1935

Guest-edited by Miki Sugiura (Hosei University, ICES)

 This special issue focuses on Japanese lacquer and lacquerware from the 1860s to the 1940s,
exploring the contexts and places where their art and craft were shaped by global trade,
technology transfer, and cultural exchange. It examines the settings and narratives in which the
crafts were produced, displayed, distributed, and transmitted. This interdisciplinary special issue
welcomes contributions from studies in international trade and economics, economic history, art
history, history of knowledge and thought, history of technology, anthropology, and material
culture studies.

Papers may address one or more of the following themes related to lacquer and lacquered products:
   - Manufacture and global trade
   - Cultural exchange and technological transfer
   - Approaches and methods of display, exhibition and evaluation
   - Conceptual formulations and categorisation of art, craft and industrial products
   - Market and trade formation of singularity products
Please note that the main period of focus of the paper is on the period from the 1860s to the 1940s.

The special issue will be published as part of the JIES No. 39 in March 2025.
Please note that all the accepted applicants will be asked to submit their full paper (up to 8,000
words, in English) for peer review by 15 th September 2024.

Please send your paper proposal by 1 st July 2024.
Paper proposals should include:
    -Name, affiliation, and contact details
    -Paper title (in English) and an abstract
     (up to 300 words in English or 1,000 characters in Japanese)
    -A short CV (maximum 2 pages)
