Faculty of Lifelong Learning and Career StudiesA Place to Acquire Practical Ability to Support Individuality
We call the process of shaping individuality “career formation,” consciously performing career formation “career design,” and society in support of career design “lifelong learning society.” Career formation and career design are performed in any and all places and times of human lives--family, school, companies and hospitals--and experts to sustain and promote careers are required in these places.
This faculty is the first such facility established in Japan for supporting personalized ways of living and fostering of new persons for the 21st C. lifelong learning society. Career Design is acquiring knowledge and technology necessary for individualistic ways of living and to putting it into practice.
Curricular Breadth and Depth
The curriculum of the Faculty of Career Design is made up of the “Ichigaya Basic Subjects”, for acquisition of broad culture and techniques for study and research, the Basic Subjects, Core Subjects, and Extended and Related Subjects, grouped in gradual levels. Among the basic subjects and core subjects there are introductory subjects for broad study of lifelong learning and career formation, and the following various subject groups are offered for extended and related subjects.

Study to learn the basic concepts of career design, and to become an independent careerist or expert in support of career design
Subject Groups Linked to Lifelong Learning Society
Study to learn about lifelong learning society, and to become instructor or expert staff member in a variety of arenas.
Subjects Groups with Regard to Life Culture and International Society
Study to deepen understanding of life, culture and own ways of living with a view to Japan and international society.
As learning accumulates from the foundation, it is possible for students to choose specialized subjects gradually, with a focus on their own paths for after graduation. Additionally, the respective subject groups include an abundance of seminars, practicums, case studies, internships, etc., with field study regarded as vital. There are many special means by which students are able to acquire actual ability, and not merely to complete credits and obtain qualifications for graduation.
Provision of Learning Opportunities to Meet Individual Needs
In the Department, where acquisition of actual abilities by each individual student is emphasized, there are two major distinguishing features for optimizing educational value. One is organization of a personal curriculum. The entire curriculum can be freely chosen, except for the required subjects centering on the first- and second- year. Subject groups in extended and related subjects merely indicate relations among subjects as an index for taking of courses, so it is possible for students either to take courses along with a single specific subject group or to take only classes as needed. Students feel free to organize an order-made curriculum to meet their needs from broad specialized subjects covering a wide variety of areas.
