Program Outline

At present, the world population is about 6 billion, and it is said this will come to over 9 billion by 2050. Meanwhile, it is predicted that the rate of increase of food production will slacken and will not be even half of the rate of the population increase. If this situation continues, we will inevitably face food shortages. More than 30 to 40% of the world food production is lost due to disease and pests, weed damage and post-harvest disease. In particular, loss due to disease will account for greater than one third of the loss, and it is predicted that this loss will reach 12% or more of the total potential food production amount. This is an amount on which 800 million people can live per year. Loss due to pest, weed damage and pollution substances is almost equal to this. Considering the fact that 800 million people will be in a state of starvation, it has become our urgent task to foster personnel equipped with environmental preservation technologies and “plant medicine studies”, such as extracting factors that inhibit food production and protecting plants. Moreover, to replace draining fossil resources, it is necessary to make further advancement in technologies to use plant-material resources, which have small environmental impact and can be supplied continuously, for energy and material substances. In order to handle this situation, this Course of Plant Clinical Science, based on education in basic bioscience, is specialized in the area pointing to expert education. It aims at fostering “plant doctors” to meet the needs of society and engineers and researchers who can participate in the development of leading-edge technologies and utilization business with respect to diagnosis, treatment and prevention of plant disease.
