With the start of the Fall Term, this announcement now takes precedence over previous disseminated H1N1 information.

Students, Concerned Parents, Faculty and Staff

The start of the Fall Term comes with apprehension at the possibility of the spread of the H1N1 Virus on campus, as the reported number of H1N1 infections increases nationwide. Should you come down with a fever or feel unwell, be sure to consult your nearest medical organization. If you have been confirmed to have contracted the Virus, you should absent yourself from classes/work for at least 5 days from the onset of symptoms. Be sure to inform the respective University campus clinic (Faculty of Sports and Health Sciences, Health Department) of all relevant information−your name, faculty or department you belong to and the date symptoms (fever or general unwell feeling) first appeared. Those who have been in steady contact with H1N1 victims (i.e. those at high risk of contracting the Flu) should consistently monitor their temperature and wear a mask for a week as well as refrain from venturing out, unless absolutely necessary.

Moreover those with underlying or chronic medical conditions or who are pregnant should discuss options with their doctors beforehand and seek medical help as soon as symptoms arise.

H1N1 Victims and Class Attendance
In order not to be unfairly penalized, students who have been ascertained as having contracted H1N1 and advised by their doctors to absent themselves from classes should inform their respective faculties, without fail, as soon as they are well enough to do so.

Clubs, Seminar Training Camps, and/or Other Group Related Activities
Groups are advised to set up a contact network and designate 1) a person as head of the network and 2) an assistant who can assume his/her duties if s/he should become ill.

  • The designated persons should take note of any group member who is absent because of not feeling well or having contracted the Flu.
  • The designated person should 1) seek the advice of local health organizations or public health centers if a number of individuals have come down with the Virus, 2) report the number of infected individuals to the university campus clinic and 3) decide whether to cancel scheduled activities or not. Later, a written summary concerning the Flu victims should be submitted to the Clinic.

Precautions
Since airborne and/or direct contact infections are the main methods of transmission, usual precautions are sufficient. These include:
  • *Rigorous washing of hands gargling
  • *Rigorous observance of personal hygiene (covering your mouth/nose when sneezing and coughing/using tissues as needed)
  • *Wearing of a mask when coughing or sneezing to prevent the spread of infection
  • *Avoiding unnecessary gatherings where large numbers of people are present
