6.Accommodations

The availability of accommodations in Japan can sometimes pose problems. The Ichigaya campus of Hosei is in central Tokyo; rents in the vicinity range from 70,000yen to 100,000yen per month. Rents for accommodations rather more distant from central Tokyo are in the region of 50,000yen to 60,000yen per month.

In Japan it is also necessary when signing a lease to pay additional (non-refundable) fees so that the initial payment is likely to amount to two to five times the monthly rent. Because of these problems, Hosei University helps to make available accommodations at comparatively low cost. Please indicate in the appropriate space of the application form if such assistance is desired

An extract from the terms of the arrangement under which such accommodation is provided is as follows:

Because Hosei University does not have enough residential accommodations of its own to offer, students requiring assistance will be helped by an external private organization which offers accommodation at low cost

NOTE
*Subsidies are available for the university designated accommodations; however, should students decide on other accommodation, s/he is responsible for all related expenses.
*Should students decide to move out of university designated accommodations, s/he is required to notify the university at least 2 weeks beforehand, as to intent.

The monthly rent (which includes "administration fees") amounts to 61,000yen. For Exchange Students, Hosei University subsidizes (30,500yen) the monthly rent. Administration fees refer to the use of shared facilities (bath, shower-room, toilet, etc.), general administrative and other miscellaneous costs.

NOTE
*Charges for electricity and water are covered by Hosei University. However, should monthly fees become excessively high due to misuse, such as excessive usage of air conditioner etc., s/he will be held responsible for the surcharge(s).
*Costs may vary according to the yearly revised contract between Hosei University and the external private organization.

In addition to the amount mentioned above, you will be assessed for the following:

NOTE
A Bedding rental (e.g. 16,800yen for 6 months; 25,200yen for 12 months for Applicants only)
B Accident (mainly fire) insurance policy (Premium; 2,000yen-4,000yen per year )
C Utilities, telephone and internet fees (where applicable)
Note: *Costs may vary according to the accommodation.

Depending on the accommodation, breakfast and evening meals are provided. (Except on Sundays and national holidays)

The above information is correct as of August 2011 but may be subject to change.

7.Immigration procedure

For non-Japanese nationals to stay in Japan, it is necessary to comply with procedures which govern their eligibility to do so, in relation to the nature of their activity in Japan and the length of their stay. Students of non-Japanese nationality wishing to study at a Japanese university must qualify as "college students" in compliance with the "Law concerning immigration control and recognition of refugee status." Persons who so qualify may not take up employment while in Japan unless that falls within the terms of the specific activity for which they are permitted to stay in Japan. The local office of the Ministry of Justice is responsible for determining such matters.

a) Application for college student status

The Hosei University International Center will make the necessary applications on students' behalf.
What to send for the application: the principal documents required are as follows:

Exchange Students and Privately financed students:

1) Application form for a "Certificate of Eligibility" [TYPEABLE PDF FORM] Download
2) 5 copies of an identity photograph
*should be "head shot" passport-style, 4.5cm x 3.5cm
*should be taken within the last 6 months
*copies using a xerox/copier machine or similar procedure are NOT acceptable
3) Copy of the applicant's passport
4) Means of financial support while in Japan [TYPEABLE PDF FORM] (Either in English or Japanese) Download
5) Certificate of financial means of support (Either in English or Japanese)*3
NOTE:
*3Copies of such statements are NOT acceptable; only original official documents issued by the bank/financial institution are valid. These must state the name of the bank and the name and status of the persons in authority whose signatures/personal seals it bears. Please note that any missing information on the current bank balance could result in the invalidation of the application by Immigration authorities. Should the student be a recipient of a scholarship from any organization(s) in his/her own country, the applicant should also submit the original certificate (with English or Japanese translation) attesting to the amount of the award.

NOTE: If you have not included ALL documents mentioned above, your application cannot be correctly processed. We are aware that some items listed above may constitute an invasion of privacy; however, for Japanese Immigration authorities these documents are requisite.

b) Application for visa

Students must apply for a student visa to enter Japan after they receive "Certificate of Eligibility" from Hosei. The nearest convenient Japanese Embassy or Consulate should be consulted regarding necessary procedures. Generally speaking, the following documents are required:

  • Visa application form: available from the Embassy or Consulate
  • Passport: preferably valid until the end of the proposed stay in Japan
  • Certificate of Eligibility: Hosei University will apply for a Certificate of Eligibility (using the completed application form (a)-1 above) on each student's behalf, and will send it when it is obtained; this will take about one month.

Note that requirements may vary according to the country concerned and students should contact the appropriate Japanese Embassy or Consulate for detailed information.
